Job Description The Aquatics Coordinator assists the Senior Program Director in supervising all areas and functions of the aquatics department at the Hazleton branch. This includes group and private lessons, aquatic events, and staffing. The Coordinator hires, trains, and supervises staff, including lifeguards and swim instructors, while ensuring the development of aquatic programming and maintaining safe conditions in and around the pool.

Qualifications

Age: Minimum of 18 years old.

Experience: 3 years of lifeguarding and 2 years of swim instruction/coaching is a plus; experience in staff supervision is required.

Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard.

Preferred Certifications: CPO, YMCA Swim Instructor, or Red Cross WSI (willing to train).

Skills: Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills and maintain physical/mental readiness.

Requirements: Must pass background checks for child abuse prevention.

Availability: Must work 15–20 hours per week in‑ratio as a lifeguard/instructor and up to 20 hours of administrative work.

Essential Functions

Safety & Surveillance: Ensures continuous surveillance for a safe pool area and creates monthly lifeguard schedules. Maintains patron‑to‑lifeguard ratios at all times.

Staff Management: Hires, trains, certifies, and supervises the lifeguard team and swim instructors. Coordinates rotations for efficiency and safety.

Instructional Standards: Ensures lessons are taught to the highest standards according to YMCA curriculum guidelines.

Communication: Directly communicates with instructors regarding scheduling and coverage. Reports facility hazards or staff incidents to leadership.

Program Development: Actively searches for ways to improve lessons, swim teams, and aquatic events.

Operations: Manages pump room operations, including chemical levels, water clarity, and chlorine/acid tanks. Performs equipment checks and chemical testing.

Direct Service: Serves as a lifeguard and teaches swim lessons as necessary (in‑ratio 15–20 hours per week).

Training: Conducts staff meetings and in‑service training; teaches Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid classes to the public as directed.

Compliance: Reviews and responds to emergency situations according to YMCA policies. Maintains accurate records for the YMCA and State Health Department.
