Description
A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is an hourly‑rated skilled craft position that performs maintenance on construction vehicles and other equipment. The mechanic typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates.
Location: Beaufort / Ridgeland
Key Duties
Analyze malfunctions and perform repairs, rebuild and maintain construction equipment such as cranes, scrapers, asphalt and concrete paving machines, motor graders, bulldozers, loaders, pump compressors and pneumatic tools.
Drive a one‑ton or larger vehicle with a standard transmission.
Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
Replace defective engines and sub‑assemblies such as transmissions.
Weld broken parts and structural members.
Read and comprehend repair manuals.
Other related job functions may include, but are not limited to:
Examine parts for damage and/or excessive wear.
Use micrometers and gauges.
Test overhauled equipment to ensure efficient operation.
Direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
Perform incidental work items included within other crafts as well as related duties.
Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred; the position typically is not entry‑level and requires prior experience as a mechanic.
Understand work directions and communicate effectively with job-site supervisors and fellow employees.
Three (3) to five (5) or more years of industry‑related experience, with emphasis on paving, roads, highways, and bridges.
Preferred CDL Class A driver's license with a hazmat endorsement and a satisfactory driving record.
Physical Demands
Heavy physical effort required.
Lift 0 to 50 pounds occasionally for hand work; stand, bend, stretch, crouch, and climb on/off equipment repetitively; use hands, arms, and legs fully; vision acceptable (natural or corrective).
Maintain continuous mental and visual attention to complete tasks efficiently in a repetitive or diversified work environment.
Constant care is necessary to prevent injury to others due to inherent hazards of construction work.
Work Environment
Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
Work environment periodically exposes employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of a construction project.
Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
Work may involve substances commonly found at construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready‑mixed concrete.
