Job Summary The Mechanical Lead will support the Mechanical Engineering Group Supervisor in leading other Mechanical Engineers who will prepare design (studies, mechanical drawings, and calculations) and procurement (material requisitions, engineering specifications, equipment data sheets, and evaluation) documents in support of various projects as part of the Mechanical Engineering/HVAC team. Technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments for mechanical systems and associated equipment procurement. The position is based in Knoxville, TN with periodic business travel.
Major Responsibilities
Provide direction and technical guidance to a small team and assist the management of discipline work process execution and ensure technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.
Evaluate, select, and apply standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria for the project including the preparation of original designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications.
Assist in building an inclusive team environment where all are able and expected to contribute to the maximum of their capabilities. Provide leadership and mentoring to team members.
Establish or assist in establishing and maintaining work plans to ensure schedules are met and stakeholder requirements are satisfied. Create and track actions, estimate hours, and update schedules.
Devise innovative approaches to solving problems from a variety of detailed technical options and assess cost implications.
Contribute directly to the cost‑effective design of plumbing and fire protection systems as well as unique requirement driven equipment.
Identify major technical uncertainties and present solution options for management decisions.
Serve as an advisor for the analysis and solution of engineering problems and interpret drawings, verbal instructions, and applicable codes relevant to project requirements.
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the client in developing the design.
Mentor and assist more junior mechanical team members.
Perform other related work as assigned by Mechanical Supervisor or Deputy Supervisors.
Education And Experience Requirements
Level One: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering with a minimum of eight (8) years of progressive related professional work experience.
Level Two: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive related professional work experience.
Required Knowledge And Skills
Must be able to complete a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
Must be authorized to live and work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Experience in Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) development, pipe sizing calculations, and equipment specification and design development for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, DOE projects, DoD projects, or chemical process facilities.
Experience with ASME B31 codes, ASME BPVC, and International Plumbing Code used in design of piping and plumbing systems.
Preferred experience with International Mechanical Code, ASHRAE, and/or SMACNA codes typically used in HVAC systems.
Experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME NQA-1, ISO-9001, or AS9100D.
U.S. Professional Engineering License (or ability to obtain).
