Job Summary The Paramedic provides basic and advanced emergency medical care to patients in an acute care setting. This role is responsible for illness and injury assessment, patient monitoring, clinical intervention, preparation for transport, and direct patient care under supervision. The Paramedic supports emergency department operations and works collaboratively with physicians and nursing staff.
Essential Functions
Provide advanced emergency care to patients under supervision of emergency physicians and nurses
Perform assessments, interventions, and documentation for patients across the lifespan
Assist with patient teaching and education, including procedures, equipment, and discharge instructions
Monitor and interpret EKG and telemetry strips
Identify and respond to changes in patient condition; notify medical team as appropriate
Assist with patient admissions and discharges, contributing to plan of care development
Set up and assist with invasive procedures; provide post-procedure monitoring
Recognize and support cultural, spiritual, and psychological needs of patients and families
Perform basic patient care tasks, including hygiene, ambulation, and dietary assistance
Ensure proper use and cleaning of clinical equipment and supplies
Demonstrate understanding of emergency, trauma, and critical care protocols
Maintain required annual competencies and in-service education (minimum 12 hours per year)
Adhere to safety, infection control, and confidentiality standards
Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Expectations
Knowledge of medications and administration practices appropriate to patient condition and age
Ability to prioritize care in fast-paced, high-acuity settings
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
Basic computer literacy and ability to document electronically
Ability to remain calm and efficient under pressure
Must read, write, and communicate effectively in English
Good attendance and reliability required
Frequent walking, standing, pushing/pulling, reaching, and handling
Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling
Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently
Constant visual and auditory acuity for monitoring equipment and patient response
Exposure to blood, body fluids, and biohazards
May be exposed to airborne particles, cleaning agents, and medical equipment
High-noise environment with fast-paced and potentially high-stress situations
Regular use of PPE and adherence to infection control standards
Qualifications Education
Paramedic Technical Certification or associate degree required
Licenses/Certifications
Current state licensure as a Paramedic required
Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required
Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or de-escalation training required
Experience
Minimum of six (6) months of experience in an acute medical/surgical setting preferred
