Patient Financial Advisor
Our Lady of the Lake Health
The Patient Financial Advisor screens uninsured patients for Medicaid and financial assistance; assists patients in completing Medicaid and financial assistance applications; manages the Medicaid eligibility/application process; collects patient responsibility for unscheduled insured inpatients and observation patients; and utilizes critical thinking skills to determine the most appropriate resources available to assist patients in need. The Patient Financial Advisor has knowledge of all aspects of the department process from registration to billing, medical insurances and collections, and will assist in resolving issues regarding a patient's ability to pay for services. The Patient Financial Advisor reviews available funding sources for which the patient qualifies and researches patients' account questions, explaining payments that have been made. The Patient Financial Advisor is expected to work independently, manage case load, and require minimal oversight.
Responsibilities
Educate, screen, and assist patients without valid insurance to enroll in third-party eligibility programs (Medicaid, FAP, alternative funding).
Interview qualified patients for potential funding sources and perform all associated functions timely and accurately.
Educate patients during interviews on applicable policies and monetary options; follow up with patient and Division of Medicaid to ensure applications are completed and documented.
Submit Medicaid applications timely and accurately.
Meet with self-pay patients to obtain valid insurance coverage, review prior account information, and update patient accounts.
Interact with patients and families with sensitivity, exhibit excellent customer service and communications skills; handle distressed patients.
Support patients and families to assure access to all available funding.
Analyze patient financial condition based on interview and input into financial counseling system; document all calls and activities.
Calculate patient out-of-pocket amounts, collect on unscheduled inpatient and observation admissions with insurance coverage.
Maintain complete records of indigent or financial assistance applicants.
Verify and assure all accounts are ready for routing for approval for charity or billing within established time frames.
Work independently, attending to detail, completing work timely and accurately; manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks.
Identify trends indicating problems and alert Supervisor/Manager/Director; initiate solutions.
Work closely with Case Management, Utilization Management, Business Office, Patient Registration, Medical Records, Ancillary departments, third-party agencies, HMO/PPOs, physicians, and patient families.
Actively participate and encourage others to use creative approaches.
Perform any other duties as assigned.
Experience & Education
1 year of experience in financial services, insurance, or billing/patient accounts.
Bachelor's Degree.
Special Skills / Training
Advanced clerical and computer skills.
Analytical and communication skills to accomplish goals in sensitive settings.
Familiarity with a variety of funding sources and eligibility; thorough understanding of hospital billing.
