FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT The College of Staten Island (CUNY) invites applications for a teacher‑scholar in its Writing Studies (English Department). The faculty member will play a key role in the First‑Year Writing Program. This position is a full‑time, doctoral lecturer line with an opportunity to earn a Continuous Employment Certificate (CCE).
The new faculty member will perform teaching, research, and guidance in areas of expertise and will serve on a committee that develops first‑year writing curricula and policies. The teaching load upon entering the position will be an annual workload of 24 units, typically a 3‑3 teaching load. The candidate will have the opportunity to rotate into one of our administrative roles in the Writing Program and may teach courses in our first‑year writing program, Writing Studies courses in the undergraduate major, and at the MA graduate level.
Campus Specific Information The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a City University of New York senior college with over 14,000 students, offering a broad range of liberal arts and science programs. CSI awards associate's, bachelor's, master's, and clinical doctoral degrees, and offers numerous PhD programs in collaboration with the CUNY Graduate Center. The college is situated on a 204‑acre site, recently expanded to include a residential component, and is actively involved in capital expansion. CSI serves a diverse student population from all five NYC boroughs and is accessible by MTA express and limited‑stop buses from Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. degree in an area of expertise or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. ABD applicants may be considered; however, their degree must be conferred prior to the first day of classes of Fall 2026 to hold the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in rhetoric and composition or English with primary specialization in Rhetoric and Composition
At least four years of teaching experience
Significant service record in a writing program, such as mentoring, curriculum development, assessment, or administration
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate pedagogical and scholarly interest in the following areas:
composition theory and pedagogy
critical pedagogy
community writing
writing program administration
writing across the curriculum
writing in the disciplines
Compensation $82,389 – $87,420. Salary commensurate with education and experience. CUNY offers a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. Salaries will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the PSC‑CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
