The Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce an opening for our next

Director of Governmental Affairs

— a key leadership role that helps shape the future of the Chippewa Valley.

This position leads the Chamber’s public policy and community relations work, builds strong partnerships with elected officials and education leaders, and helps advance a strong pro-business climate that supports our region’s economic growth.

Position Summary:

Lead the Chamber’s public policy, advocacy, and community relations efforts. Build and maintain strong relationships with elected leaders, educational partners, businesses, and community stakeholders to advance a pro-business environment that supports workforce development and economic growth. This role combines strategic thinking, communication, and relationship-building — and is well-suited for both experienced public policy professionals and emerging leaders eager to learn.

Primary Responsibilities

Advocacy & Public Policy

Oversee programs related to local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory issues.

Monitor policy developments and communicate impacts to the business community.

Develop and implement advocacy strategies that promote business and workforce priorities.

Represent the Chamber at government meetings, hearings, and policy roundtables.

Maintain complete and accurate records of advocacy activities.

Communications & Thought Leadership

Write blogs, articles, and policy summaries to keep investors informed of timely issues.

Prepare briefings for the Board and advocacy committees.

Facilitate discussions and present updates in public settings.

Relationship Building

Serve as the primary liaison to elected officials at all levels of government.

Maintain strong working relationships with school districts, higher education partners, and community organizations.

Support Chamber-wide investor retention by engaging investors and communicating the value of our advocacy work.

Maintain a positive relationship with our government relations firm (currently Ruder Ware).

Programs & Events

Plan and execute advocacy-related programs such as the Chippewa Valley Rally, candidate forums, Eggs & Issues policy sessions, and legislative updates.

Coordinate and staff the Governmental Affairs Committee.

Internal Collaboration & Leadership

Work closely with Chamber directors to align advocacy strategies with workforce, education, and community initiatives.

Develop, manage, and monitor the Governmental Affairs budget.

Participate in cross-department leadership initiatives and special projects.

Manage and oversee government affairs interns.

Position Requirements & Qualifications

Required

College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong written and oral communication skills.Excellent relationship-building skills and professional presence.

Strong organizational and time-management abilities.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital communication tools.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred

Knowledge of government systems, public policy, or community affairs.

Chamber of Commerce, association, or nonprofit experience.

Comfort with public speaking and facilitating discussions.

Experience or interest in public affairs, community engagement, or policy research.
