The Learning & Development (L&D) team plays a critical role in empowering and developing internal talent through high-impact training and development programs. As an Instructional Designer, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to create engaging, effective learning experiences that drive employee performance in a fast‑paced environment. This role reports to the Manager, Learning & Development.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and develop computer-based training modules to ensure alignment with adult learning principles and desired outcomes.
Partner with subject matter experts to design and develop engaging content for a variety of audiences and delivery modes (online courses, SharePoint pages, videos) with clear strategies and tactics to achieve desired learning outcomes.
Maintain, revise, and optimize existing learning products, incorporating learner feedback, accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG), and efficiency improvements to meet evolving business needs.
Serve as project manager for multiple concurrent initiatives, managing timelines, budgets, and priorities with the ability to rapidly adapt to shifting priorities in a high‑growth environment.
Act as learning management system (LMS) administrator for the L&D team, providing user support, troubleshooting SCORM/AICC issues, and collaborating with the LMS team to enhance system functionality.
Lead the development and implementation of new courses, focusing on areas such as leadership development, HR, health and safety, and soft skills and incorporate emerging technologies such as AI where applicable.
Create and maintain practical resources, including how‑to guides, job aids, and online tools for people managers and individual contributors.
Develop strong written copy to promote programs, events, and workshops.
Oversee the team’s intranet sites on SharePoint to ensure transparency of initiatives, training events, and important communications.
Partner with the L&D team to develop metrics that evaluate effectiveness of online courses through surveys and feedback.
Ensure all online resources are regularly audited and updated to reflect the latest compliance standards, organizational changes, and best practices in instructional design.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
2+ years of experience designing and developing training curriculum.
2+ years of experience managing and utilizing learning management systems.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Proficiency with e-learning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline/Rise, Adobe Captivate, iSpring Studio) and multimedia software (MS PowerPoint, Vyond, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/After Effects, Camtasia).
Experience with video production, including live recording, video/audio editing, and voiceover.
Strong project management skills, including experience with tools such as Jira or Microsoft Project; ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast‑paced setting.
Demonstrated expertise in adult learning theories, accessibility/inclusivity principles, and evaluation frameworks.
Proficiency with SharePoint for site management and content collaboration; experience with data analytics tools for LMS reporting.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly in written and oral formats to all organizational levels.
Collaborative yet autonomous work style; comfort with ambiguity, innovation, and inclusive learning experiences.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This is not a remote position and will require relocation if not already local to our major site locations – Hawthorne, CA / Redmond, WA / Brownsville, TX / Austin, TX / McGregor, TX.
Must be willing to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Pay Range:
Instructional Designer / Level I: $75,000 – $95,000 per year.
Instructional Designer / Level II: $90,000 – $115,000 per year.
Additional compensation may include long‑term incentives, stock options or awards, and discretionary bonuses. SpaceX also offers medical, vision, and dental coverage; a 401(k) retirement plan; disability, life, and paid parental leave; and other benefits. Employees accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation, 10 or more paid holidays, and sick leave in accordance with company policy.
