Evaluates, examines, diagnoses and treats patients in collaboration with supervising physicians or substitute supervisors according to established guidelines and protocols. Provides care in hospital and outpatient settings, including weekends and shift work, and assists with surgical procedures. Responsibilities

Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance. Ensures assessment and care delivered in accordance with licensing boards, hospital policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Collects patient assessment data systematically, focusing on physical, psychosocial, age, cultural, and spiritual needs. Performs systematic physical exam and history of present illness. Documents assessment data, history of present illness, and physical findings in the medical record within established time frame. Involves patient, family, and healthcare providers when appropriate, directed by physician practice. Prescribes medications per state prescriptive authority guidelines and Excela Health Allied Health Committee directed by physician practice.

Demonstrates leadership using behaviors inherent to the practice of a professional physician assistant.

Solves problems using critical thinking, seeking assistance from supervising physician as needed. Maintains accountability for actions taken. Functions as a resource person. Acts as a patient advocate. Performs effectively in preceptor role for new employees. Assists in reducing organizational costs. Completes annual competencies.

Assists in compliance with state, JCAHO, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.

Prepares for surveys/inspections. Participates in non-punitive medication reporting system. Ensures accountability for narcotics per regulatory requirements. Participates in safety and disaster drills.

Provides patient safety in compliance with nursing, hospital, and physician practice guidelines.

Uses two forms of patient identification. Assumes appropriate code team role during emergencies. Responds effectively during emergency situations. Maintains safe and clean environment. Adheres to infection control processes. Practices National Patient Safety Goals.

Participates in unit performance activities to enhance quality of patient care and customer service.

Identifies initiatives to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, or effectiveness. Assists in chart reviews/audits for performance improvement data collection. Supports initiatives for improved patient outcomes and office efficiencies.

Manages physical and psychological problems of patients.

Identifies normal and abnormal findings. Implements treatment plan and reassesses as directed. Evaluates responses to medications and treatments. Prescribes immunizations per schedule. Seeks appropriate consultation.

Communicates effectively with physician supervisor and other providers to achieve desired outcomes.

Initiates and maintains problem list and medication lists. Assesses and facilitates consultation when indicated. Directs patients to appropriate level of care and communicates information timely. Assists in identifying and utilizing resources or social agencies.

Ability to perform essential functions on Physical Conditions chart and Working Conditions chart. Performs procedures and assists in surgery, providing care to surgical patients per guidelines.

Positions patients and assists surgeon in operating room. Preps and drapes patient as per guidelines. Assists surgeon with tasks defined by surgeon. Maintains sterile techniques. Performs skin closures as directed. Monitors patients until stable. Performs suture removal and dressing changes. Available for call for emergency surgeries.

Directs and provides appropriate pre- and post-operative care.

Performs history and physicals as designated, reports findings timely. Provides preoperative teaching. Performs patient rounds with assessment, labs, diagnostics, reports progress. Orders testing as per guidelines. Supports documentation of lab/results reflecting required history and physical elements. Communicates changes in patient's progress or critical test results. Prepares discharge planning. Dictates discharge summaries timely. Provides counseling to patients/families.

Performs clinical responsibilities maximizing patient care and outcomes.

Assumes code team role during emergencies. Facilitates timely treatment of abnormal labs. Develops workflow patterns for transfers/discharges. Participates in outcome management and Press Ganey scores.

Collaborates with supervising physicians to interview, evaluate, and assess patients in clinic setting, provide recommendations for treatment.

Evaluates status and provides treatment recommendations. Adjusts medication as indicated. Educates patients/families on medication rationale and side effects.

Collaborates with supervising or substitute supervising physicians and treatment team to achieve desired outcomes.

Alerts team to significant changes in patient status. Reviews treatment goals within prescribed time frames. Communicates pertinent info timely.

Documents in medical record.

Records current mental status. Documents screenings and assessments. Records medication changes, prescriptions written, samples provided. Documents patient concerns and questions. Documents telephone contact with patients, families, pharmacists, physicians. Records session start/end times. Signs and dates documentation.
