Position Summary

An entry position that requires a skills‑based training course. The associate must pass specific training sessions by defined dates after hire. Once trained, he or she will perform maintenance mechanic duties with knowledge of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of plant equipment and facilities. Successful associates will complete additional training courses through the Charleston Water System Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program.

Essential Functions

Perform skilled duties of moderate difficulty; includes alignment, bearings, seals, lubrication, drives, mechanical principles, torque, fasteners, plumbing, piping, and pumps.

Assist in advanced assignments such as maintenance of diesel or gasoline‑powered generators and pump systems.

Maintain and repair machinery and equipment such as valves, pumps, gear trains, speed reducers, and hydrants.

Operate power‑operated machines (lift truck, backhoe, tractor mower, bobcat).

Use measurement tools to align rotating elements.

Handle chemicals and maintain MSDS chemical safety standards.

Work under emergency conditions or be on 24‑hour on‑call as required.

Operate shop equipment and perform welding (MIG, TIG, ARC) and metal cutting/grinding operations.

Conduct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance including vibration analysis, oil analysis, HVAC, plumbing, lighting/electrical, office furnishings, grounds keeping, and custodial tasks.

Keep accurate records and documentation.

Participate in departmental cross‑training and maintain safety protocols.

Ensure compliance with all Charleston Water System policies and the Environmental Management System.

Job Requirements

Knowledge of the Charleston Water System Environmental Management System policy and procedures.

Additional Duties

Accurate documentation and record‑keeping.

Welding or cutting as required.

Safe handling of hazardous materials.

Designation for 24‑hour on‑call duties.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements, Activities, and Working Conditions

Effective verbal and written communication, including radio use.

Listening to and executing complex instructions.

Prioritizing tasks under emergency conditions.

Reading color codes and using computer software for reporting.

Use of hearing protection in noisy environments.

Manual dexterity for lifting up to 50 lbs; occasionally exceeding 50 lbs with assistance.

Reaching, pulling, and handling equipment such as valves.

Ascending/descending ladders, stairs, and ramps up to 13 stories.

Movement across uneven terrain while operating heavy equipment.

Working independently and in varied weather conditions with appropriate PPE.

Using respirators and self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when necessary.

Handling water and wastewater treatment chemicals.

Operating and maintaining motor vehicles and heavy equipment (backhoes).

Mitigating exposure to vibrations and oscillating movements.

Working in confined spaces such as chemical pits and spiral stairwells.

Adhering to job safety analysis requirements.

Education And/Or Experience

Entry position requiring completion of the Charleston Water Systems Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program (classroom and on‑the‑job training). All training must be completed by stipulated deadlines; failure may result in termination.

Prior work record indicating dependability and conscientiousness.

Ability to work independently.

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

Valid South Carolina Driver's License required.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A desirable.

Training Needs

OSHA and departmental safety training as required.

Skills‑based training.
