Job Summary
Assists the Dentist in providing a wide range of dental procedures within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Provides chair side services, educational information, cleaning and sterilizing equipment and areas, and clerical assistance.
Job Duties
Provide chair side assistance during procedures.
Cleans and disinfects patient area before and after each patient according to infection control guidelines.
Arranges dental instruments and materials and sterilizes instruments, equipment, countertops, and related items.
Provides educational information to patients regarding required, current, and post‑treatment care.
Performs coronal polishing, sealant placement, and nitrous oxide assistance as within scope of practice.
Operates ultrasound sealer (Cavitron) and hand instruments for calculus removal.
Makes rubber dam placement when indicated.
Orders supplies, maintains inventory, schedules appointments, and assists with clerical duties such as answering phones, retrieving and preparing charts, typing, filing, and dismissing patients.
Assists in taking impressions, pours and trims casts, and performs other basic laboratory procedures.
Takes, exposes, processes, and mounts X‑rays within scope of practice, recording pertinent information.
Certifications & Licenses
Obtain a Dental Assistant Permit from the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry within thirty (30) days of employment and maintain it throughout employment.
Current expanded duty permits for Coronal Polishing, Sealants, or Assisting in the Administration of Nitrous Oxide may be obtained as needed.
Maintained permits and certifications throughout employment, obtainable from an ADA‑accredited program or an Indian Health Service Facility.
Qualifications
High school education or general education degree (GED).
No additional experience required.
Employee must not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) and must pass a background investigation.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to reach with hands and arms; sit and use fine motor skills; sometimes stand, walk, climb, balance, lift or move up to 25 pounds. Requires good vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception) and hearing.
Work Environment
May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and radiation. Noise level is usually moderate.
Additional Responsibilities
Shift supervision duties include planning work distribution, organizing schedules, providing training, and supervising ongoing training for assigned staff.
May assume a lead position with supervisory responsibilities.
Legal and Compliance
The employee must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care and remain exempt from OIG and GSA sanctions.
