Rolling Hills Zoo is looking for an energetic and positive individual to join our dynamic team of animal care keepers with a focus on carnivores as we prepare for the 2026 opening of Tiger Falls, which will feature new yards for our Amur tigers, reimagined and enhanced yards for our snow leopards and the introduction of red pandas to the zoo. Additionally, the carnivore team cares for lions, spotted hyenas, and African painted dogs.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrate a commitment to the Zoo’s mission statement and core values.
Perform duties in a service-oriented manner.
Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a healthy work environment.
Recognize the needs of others and treat others with respect and dignity.
Maintain good work habits and adhere to all policies and procedures.
Animal Care
Will prepare animal diets as prescribed and deliver daily diets to assigned species.
Will provide fresh water daily and/or maintain water delivery systems.
Will maintain ponds and/or pools in animal exhibits.
Will clean and maintain indoor and outdoor animal areas daily as determined by the Animal Care Manager.
Will always ensure animal containment and human safety by performing regular inspections of assigned areas.
Will maintain an accurate and informative daily record of animal care and behavior including but not limited to enrichment and training records. Keepers are responsible for entering husbandry and behavioral data in the ZIMS program.
Will observe and monitor the health status of each individual animal daily or more often as determined by veterinarian or curator.
Will provide appropriate species-specific enrichment to assigned species. This may include diet presentation, construction and provision of enrichment devices, and alteration to existing exhibits.
Will provide behavioral training to assigned species. All training must be approved by the General Curator and will involve a team approach that includes area keepers and Animal Care Manager.
It is the responsibility of each keeper to communicate daily information clearly to co-workers and the management team.
Responsible for becoming familiar with the husbandry guidelines for assigned species.
Will become knowledgeable of assigned species’ behaviors, including breeding, socialization, parenting, etc.
Will provide medical care as designated by the Veterinarian. Will assist in the capture and restraint of animals as needed.
Will attend and contribute to keeper meetings.
Ability to work independently and as a part of a team to facilitate daily animal care and excellence in welfare.
Ability to follow directions and act in accordance with all established protocols and procedures.
Will comply with all AZA and USDA standards.
Maintenance
Will accompany maintenance staff on inspection tours of appropriate areas.
Will perform minor maintenance on buildings, yards, and surrounding areas.
Must be able to accomplish daily tasks within an acceptable/established timeframe.
Additional maintenance or landscape concerns will be reported to the Animal Care Manager.
Will do daily checks on vehicles and equipment and report any concerns to the appropriate departments.
Ability to use power tools and equipment, such as weed‑trimmers, lawn mowers, etc.
Additional Duties
Will present Keeper Encounters to the public as assigned and provide public education at animal exhibits as such situations arise.
Will work with other departments to present a positive experience for guests at feed stations, if applicable.
Will present a friendly, courteous, and helpful demeanor to all guests always.
Will respectfully receive and follow directions, protocols, and safety requirements as set out by RHZ.
Will establish and maintain effective, efficient and cooperative relationships with employees, senior administration, vendors and customers.
Experience Required
Animal experience is preferred.
Experience with animal training is preferred.
Must have strong people skills.
Must be a team player.
Must be skilled at public speaking.
Must be well organized and able to function independently.
Must be able to lift 70 pounds.
Must be capable of working in all weather.
Experience with ZIMS is preferred.
AA, AS or higher degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science or other related degree preferred but not required.
