Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Secondary Education, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with a Mathematics Endorsement (EX or) qualifying the educator to teach mathematics at the high school level (grades 6–12 or 7–12).

Previous experience teaching high school students is strongly preferred.

Strong understanding of adolescent development, secondary mathematics pedagogy, and effective instructional strategies.

Experience supporting students in advanced coursework, dual enrollment, or Early Middle College programming (preferred).

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and instructional technology tools.

Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment and contribute positively to school culture.

Position Description:

Detroit Early Middle College is seeking a passionate and dedicated High School Math Teacher to join our innovative and student-centered instructional team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to preparing scholars for success in advanced mathematics, dual enrollment coursework, and future college and career pathways. As a High School Math Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the academic experience of Early Middle College students by creating engaging, rigorous, and supportive learning opportunities aligned to both high school standards and postsecondary expectations.

Physical Requirements:

Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.

Terms of Employment:

Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement rigorous, engaging lesson plans aligned with Detroit Early Middle College curriculum, the Michigan Mathematics Standards, and college-readiness expectations.

Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that promotes mathematical thinking, perseverance, collaboration, and academic confidence.

Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students enrolled in Early Middle College pathways.

Regularly assess student understanding using formative and summative assessments, and adjust instruction based on data.

Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and communicate academic progress with families.

Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and Early Middle College partners to support student academic planning, readiness, and success in upper-level math coursework.

Participate in the teaching and learning cycle, including data analysis, developing action plans, delivering re‑teach lessons, and reflecting on instructional practice.

Contribute to the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), 504 Plans, and behavior plans as needed.

Engage in ongoing professional development to deepen content knowledge, pedagogy, and best practices for Early Middle College instruction.

Maintain clear, timely, and professional communication with students, families, colleagues, and postsecondary partners.

Support a school culture grounded in respect, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Adhere to district and school policies, expectations, and protocols as outlined in the Policies and Procedures Manual.

Other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Strong understanding of adolescent development and secondary math pedagogy.

Deep knowledge of algebra, geometry, statistics, pre-calculus, and other high school mathematics content areas.

Ability to integrate real-world applications, problem-based learning, and college-readiness skills.

Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and relevant educational technology tools.

Ability to work in a dynamic environment and contribute positively to school culture.
