Description The Sanitation Worker I ensures the cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of Salina's residential areas and public spaces by efficiently collecting and disposing of waste, recyclables, and bulk items. This role is essential in maintaining a healthy environment for the community through waste disposal, recycling processes, and proper handling of hazardous materials. By supporting sanitation operations, the worker contributes directly to public health, environmental sustainability, and the overall quality of life in Salina.
Loads refuse, recycling, and yard waste into sanitation or recycling trucks efficiently.
Assists with unloading refuse or recyclables at designated sites, including landfill or recycling facilities; unloads recyclables from vehicles.
Removes litter, debris, and refuse from streets, alleys, and public spaces, ensuring clean and safe environments.
Collects bulk waste, including furniture, appliances, and other large items as part of special collection services; ensures proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste and large debris.
Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of solid waste.
Maintains landfill sites.
Services trucks and equipment as required; repairs refuse carts.
Prepares minimal records of own activities.
Education
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience
Experience in manual labor, preferably in waste management, recycling, construction, or other heavy physical labor roles; knowledge of waste disposal or recycling procedures is beneficial.
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods, including lifting heavy objects, running designated routes, and enduring outdoor work in adverse weather conditions.
Requirements
Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license at hire.
Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
Work Type
Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Works outside in adverse weather conditions.
Machines, Tools, Equipment
Brooms, hydraulic lifts, power washers, sanitation trucks (refuse trucks, recycling trucks, etc.), shovels, rakes, and other equipment used in waste collection and maintenance tasks.
Hours
Monday – Friday.
Shift begins at 7:00 a.m.
Starting Pay DOQ
$18.26–19.17/hr.
$37,981–39,874/yr.
Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. and before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off
48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
96 hours of sick leave during first year.
