Become a College Prep Mentor! Spring 2026 Supervisor:

Students ages 17-19 (12th graders), Program Associates

Description

The SBU academy is an after‑school youth development academic program that provides student‑athletes with a comprehensive pathway from middle school through high school and college, ultimately preparing them for successful careers. The program focuses on academic support, social‑emotional learning (SEL), and college and career development, equipping student‑athletes with the necessary tools for their future success.

As an

SBU College Prep Mentor , the main objective is to equip program youth with the necessary resources and support to graduate high school and pursue higher education successfully. Mentors are paired with 2‑3 SBU high school seniors and guide them through the college application process.

Time Commitment:

This is an in‑person volunteer opportunity lasting one semester. Academic Mentors are asked to commit a minimum of 2 hours, one day a week. Volunteers may take additional shifts if they are available.

Sessions are held Wednesdays from 5:15 pm to 7:15 pm at

Careers in Sports High School

(730 Concourse Village W, Bronx, NY 10451).

Responsibilities

Assist seniors in creating a well‑rounded college list that aligns with their interests, goals, and preferences.

Help students craft compelling personal statements that showcase their unique experiences, strengths, and aspirations.

Provide guidance on financial aid options such as scholarships, grants, loans, and work‑study programs and assist students in completing financial aid applications.

Serve as a positive role model, promoting the importance of education and motivating students to pursue higher education opportunities.

Desired Qualifications

Passion for our mission and a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the South Bronx community.

Strong writing skills for assisting with personal statements and other written application components.

Excellent communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and clear instruction. Bilingual volunteers are welcome.

Patience, effective problem‑solving skills, and empathy for navigating challenges throughout the application process.

Cultural sensitivity and the ability to create an inclusive environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

Reliability and responsibility with consistent attendance and punctuality.

Training College Prep Mentor training covers the program's goals, personal statements, college lists, financial aid assistance, the college admissions process, and effective mentoring techniques. Cultural competency training may also be provided.

Beyond mentoring, volunteers are encouraged to engage with participants through soccer games and practices, strengthening relationships and supporting student development.
