Summary for Deckhand
The Deckhand executes duties to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of the vessel. This position may also provide stand watches for the Bridge Watch Officer's navigation purposes.
Licensed deckhands will operate small inflatable tenders and DIBs as directed by the Chief Mate for the transportation of guests on scenic rides and transportation to and from shore.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities for Deckhand
Manage mooring lines during docking and undocking procedures; handle anchor winches during anchor procedures; set, take, and secure the gangway, ensuring its safety for guests and crew, and assist them while using the gangway.
Perform watch duties while underway, anchored, or in port, as assigned by the Chief Mate.
Hold a position on the ship’s Emergency Station Bill; meet requirements for both drills and actual emergencies (fire, flooding, man overboard, abandon ship, medical, spill response).
Perform a variety of tasks as assigned by the Chief Mate (janitorial duties, upkeep and maintenance of the vessel, and guest services).
Perform engineering and security rounds as directed by the Chief Mate and Chief Engineer.
Assist the officer on watch while on bridge watch (steering, chart work, lookout, bridge electronics) with precedence over all else.
Assist in baggage handling, laundry loading/unloading, potable water transfer, garbage removal, window cleaning, and vessel washdown while in port.
On turnaround day, assist with loading the ship’s stores, baggage movements, and exterior cleaning not completed while underway.
Interact with guests in a friendly and courteous manner at all times; assist guests on/off the vessel at the gangway, escort to staterooms, work on stateroom maintenance projects, perform safety rounds, and when the bridge is open.
Enhance guest experience by actively searching for wildlife and reporting sightings to the officer on watch and the Naturalist.
Follow prescribed hours set by the vessel’s daily roster.
Maintain awareness of basic safety rules, workplace safety, and environmental respect.
Participate in special projects as required by the business.
Minimum Qualifications for Deckhand
Relevant experience in deckhand duties preferred.
Valid deckhand license is a must.
Ability to work in a fast-paced maritime environment with strong teamwork and communication skills.
Physical fitness and stamina to perform heavy lifting and work in varied weather conditions.
Strong knowledge or willingness to learn maritime safety, navigation, and shipboard operations.
