Library Assistant I (part-time)

Under the direction of the Dean, Learning Resource Center, the part‑time Library Assistant I performs various routine tasks in the designated library area serving staff, students, alumni, and community borrowers and other duties as assigned. The Library Assistant I is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform routine functions such as charging and discharging materials, collecting and recording fines, issuing community borrower cards. May assist in updating patron records and processing of overdue notices.
May take action to diffuse disruptions in the library. Remind students of library and college policies. Monitor library and notify supervisor and security about problems. Assist in evacuating library patrons during emergencies.
Prepare Library/LRC for weekday opening and closing according to established procedure or direction. Library key holder.
Assist patrons in locating library materials and setup and use of various types of library equipment. Assist patrons in all settings by answering simple directional questions or directing them to the proper resource.
May edit patron, item and/or bibliographic records in the library management system database. May physically prepare and repair items for circulation as instructed.
Follow FERPA privacy guidelines to assure confidentiality of student, employee and community information the library and college use. May edit information in the college’s data management system.
Perform clerical duties such as typing letters, memos, schedules, patron notifications and maintain the study room reservation calendar as instructed.
Order, count, verify, balance and maintain cash on hand for change and overdue fine drawers. Make change for patrons. Call, email, calculate, collect and record fines and resolve or refer fine related issues. Block patrons when necessary.
May order office supplies, photocopy, file and/or process mail. Answer and route incoming calls.
Sort and shelve library materials.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Minimum High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Minimum six (6) months related experience and/or training in a service setting environment required
Library experience preferred.
Qualifications
In addition to the above, qualifications sought include: Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions, send correspondence, and memos. Ability to understand, speak effectively, communicate, and work well with other departments, supervisors, faculty, staff, students, and various other patrons regarding problems and suggestions. Excellent customer service skills; ability to work cooperatively with a diverse populations; Basic typing, Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook experience is necessary; previous database experience is helpful; must be able to multi‑task and manage frequent interruptions; general working knowledge of Koha ILS is preferred; ability to prioritize work, remain focused, and pay attention to detail; must have cash handling experience; familiarity with shelving materials using the alphabet and the Library of Congress cataloging system; ability to manage other duties as assigned. Preferred: Prior library experience; ability to diagnose and resolve issues with basic library computer hardware and software. Ability to learn emerging technologies. Experience with basic graphic design, film editing, and music editing software is a plus.

Hours Fall, Spring and Summer Semester Hours 15 hours per week Monday: 12:30 PM-6:00 PM Tuesday: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Wednesday: 12:30 PM-6:00 PM No hours available between semesters and holiday breaks.
$15.23-$15.68/hour
This is a non‑benefit eligible part‑time position; pro‑rated paid leave hours may be available based on hours worked after a waiting period.
