$800 per week ($600 living stipend + $200 additional benefit)

Status:

Full‑time exempt, temporary AmeriCorps National Service position

ACCORD (The Appalachian Conservation Corps) connects young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities. Our AmeriCorps program offers a term of service that provides hands‑on experience, benefits, and a pathway to a career in conservation.

Position Summary:

The Visitor Services and Education Individual Placement is a 34‑week internship that works directly with National Park Service staff. The Corps Member will serve as the face of the park, greeting visitors at the visitor center and presenting 30‑minute Battlefield Orientation talks. Responsibilities also include distributing park literature, answering visitors’ questions, and supporting interpretive programs and field trips.

Responsibilities:

Work with local schools and youth groups, providing education opportunities from kindergarten through college.

Respond to inquiries from teachers, schedule field trips, and assist in developing new Parks as Classrooms initiatives.

Present curriculum‑based programs to students and summer youth groups, operate a youth activity tent, and deliver third‑person living history programs.

Study assigned research materials to develop an accurate, in-depth knowledge of nineteenth‑century American history.

Perform special event duties such as photographic documentation, set‑up of chairs and traffic cones, vehicle parking, traffic control, crowd control, and first aid.

Deliver interpretive walks, talks, and roving interpretation on the battlefield.

Assist with office duties as requested, including making copies, answering phones, and stuffing envelopes.

Maintain polite and pleasant interactions with the public and coworkers, exhibit reliable attendance, punctuality, and professionalism, and adapt information to audience needs.

The most important factors in evaluating performance are: 1) Polite and pleasant interactions with the public and coworkers; 2) Reliable attendance, punctuality, and professionalism; 3) Accuracy and clarity of information provided, along with effective interpretive and public‑speaking skills.

IP members receive training in interpretation, education skills, Civil War history, customer service, first aid/CPR, and safety. Additional professional development may also be available.

General Qualifications:

Must be aged 18‑30, U.S. citizen, and hold a high school diploma or GED.

Must have a clear National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check.

Eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.

Preferred Qualifications:

Interest or knowledge in U.S. History and the Civil War.

Two‑year degree or relevant experience in education, parks and recreation, or history.

Curriculum or program development and facilitation experience.

Valid driver’s license.

Public speaking and presentation skills.

Professionalism in working with partners and visitors.

Background in customer service, education, or public presentation.

Interest in a career with a public‑land management agency.

Paid bi‑weekly.

Earn up to $5,176.50 AmeriCorps Segal Education Award upon successful completion of a 1,200‑hour minimum service term.

Option to enroll in free health, vision, and dental benefits.

Eligibility for Public Land Corps Hiring Authority, offering two‑year noncompetitive hiring status for federal positions.

Federal student loan forbearance and interest payoff.

Member Assistance Program: three free counseling sessions.

Subject‑specific certifications and trainings.
