Job Responsibilities

Operate equipment such as excavator or tractor with ditcher pulling shoulders, cleaning out ditches, clearing right‑of‑ways, and repairing washouts.

Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.

Maintain a positive water flow and protect the integrity of the roadway.

Operate backhoe/front‑end loader to lay pipe for driveways and other drainage structures, repair shoulders, and repair bridges.

Set up traffic control devices according to the South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and ensure all signs and cones are displayed correctly.

Keep alert at all times, flag traffic according to the standards set when needed.

Clear right‑of‑way hazards such as tree limbs using the chainsaw, picking up all debris and loading it onto the truck.

Work with debris crew across counties and districts to assist in clean‑up after major storms.

Follow all safety procedures when operating the chainsaw.

Operate medium to heavy equipment in emergencies and/or hazardous weather.

Operate a belt loader when working with the ditching crew.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical demands: bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and manipulating objects up to 50 lbs; walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal hours, especially during inclement weather or emergencies. Exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Possibility of overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
