Purpose Serve as the primary academic advisor for Sociology and a secondary advisor for Health & Society. Provide academic advising services and support to undergraduate students pursuing credentials (majors, minors, certificates) offered by Sociology and Health & Society. This position is part of an advising team that supports multiple majors and departments; all advisors on the team cross‑train on the team’s full portfolio; advisor caseloads may be adjusted based on fluctuations in the student population.
Job Responsibilities
Routine Academic Advising: Communicate requirements and academic options to facilitate student progress to degree; establish rapport and counsel students on educational opportunities; provide information about degree requirements, academic policies, institutional rules; assist with petitions, overrides, and maintain accurate records.
Registration Advising/Enrollment Management: Advise students during registration, assist with semester course selection, verify course applicability, manage course closures, reservations, waitlists, and prereqs; collaborate with department staff and faculty.
Developmental Advising: Help students identify and pursue educational, life, and career goals; develop a plan for timely graduation; support students experiencing academic difficulty; create Success Agreements; make referrals to resources.
Orientation Advising: Advise incoming first‑year and transfer students at orientation events; review student records and provide registration support.
Department Collaboration: Provide input on curriculum matters; liaise with faculty and course staff; initiate or enhance unit‑specific programs and co‑curricular opportunities.
Team Support/Communication: Participate in meetings; provide metrics and input; assist with administrative tasks; respond to inquiries; contribute to promotional materials.
Professional Development: Attend meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
University Service: Serve on committees, provide mentorship, assist with programming; volunteer for events; support other UT, Liberal Arts, and Student Affairs objectives.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and six years of experience working with college students, or Master’s degree in a related field and four years of experience working with college students.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working with undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and/or at the University of Texas at Austin.
Salary Range $50,000.00 + depending on qualifications
