Nature and Scope The Aquatics Certification Trainer is responsible for assisting the Aquatics Director with scheduling, evaluating, and training new and current CPR, lifeguard, and/or YMCA Swim Instructor candidates as well as assisting with monthly/quarterly in‑service trainings for lifeguard/swim instructor staff. This position creates and implements all YMCA Certified course work for the above trainings. The Certification Trainer is responsible for observing and directing all class participants, providing feedback and appropriate corrections as per YMCA guidelines and Aquatics Director direction.

Minimum Requirements

Current YMCA Lifeguard Instructor, ASHI Instructor and/or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer Certification

Ability to complete at least three certification courses within the calendar year

Excellent customer service experience/standards

Ability to communicate course material in a clear and understanding manner

Ability to teach effectively in different learning environments

Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook

Ability to learn and use office technologies and systems

Must be able to read, write and speak English

Must be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends

CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required

Y‑USA Trainer certifications (facilitation skills, adult concepts, etc.)

Y‑USA Leader Certification (within 90 days of hire)

At least 18 years of age for (lifeguard instructor and ASHI CPR instructor) and 21 years of age (swim instructor trainer)

At least 1 year job related experience

Ongoing Responsibilities

CPR, Lifeguard and/or Swim Instructor Training/ Recertification Courses

Oversee and manage the complete creation and execution of ASHI CPR, BLS, YMCA Lifeguard and/or YMCA Swim Instructor new, crossover or recertification courses

Conduct at least one Recertification course and at least three Lifeguard course per year.

Consistently meet all course objectives within class instruction and testing with all participants

Organize the class environment to enhance individual and group performance and to minimize distractions

Cover all material required for each course

Use corrective feedback to evaluate participants’ progress and correct problems

Supervise and give guidance to any Instructor Aides assisting with the course

Ensure that participants meet the course completion requirements

Complete all required records, forms, and reports, including attendance records, certifications forms, class rosters, and accident/incident reports.

Administer and score the final examination

Submit the completed course records and report to the governing agency

Issue course completion certificates

Responsible for the safety of all people who enter the pool area or in the classroom

Responsible for the knowledge and understanding of the YMCA policies, procedures and Instructor responsibilities

Maintain branch and association certifications in CPR‑O, YMCA Lifeguard, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Branch and off‑site Emergency procedures, and any other required certifications and/or training required by the Metro Atlanta YMCA.

Lifeguard In‑Service Training

With the guidance of the Aquatics director, support and help execute monthly Lifeguard and/or quarterly swim instructor in‑service trainings

Help in developing a lesson plan to incorporate Lifeguard/Swim Instructor policies/procedures, dry land and in‑water skills

Use corrective feedback to evaluate and correct problems

Support in having all equipment ready to use for each in‑service

Use creativity in the execution of training program

Learn and follow Aquatics department policies and procedures

Keeps the pool and classroom areas clean and clear of any potential hazards

Informs the Aquatics Director and/or Director on Duty of any problems or necessary repairs

Display a positive, customer service focused and professional image

Learn and follow safety and emergency‑preparedness procedures for the YMCA

Perform additional duties as needed.

Work Environment & Physical Demands Physically perform all skills required of a Certification Trainer. Hear noises and distress signals in the Aquatic environment, remain alert with no lapses of consciousness and be able to see and observe all areas of responsibility.
