Nature and Scope Under the direct supervision of the Wellness Director, the Group Exercise Instructor I leads land and water YMCA group exercise classes. The instructor selects appropriate music, sets up and takes down equipment, and educates class members about the YMCA COACH APPROACH. The role supports YMCA of the USA initiatives to strengthen community foundations through healthy living.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED.
At least 18 years of age.
Less than one year of experience teaching group exercise classes or one or more years of group exercise participation.
Must obtain YMCA/ACE online Group Exercise Instructor Certification (or equivalency) and supplemental courses required by Y‑USA/Y‑Metro Atlanta within 60 days of hire date.
Water instructors must complete YMCA/AEA online certification and required supplemental courses, including the Y‑Metro Atlanta Water Fitness Specialty Course (Prerequisite: YMCA Group Exercise Instructor Certification) or the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional (AFP) Certification within 60 days of hire date.
Maintain full access to Y‑Link (link.ymca.net) and the Metro Atlanta YMCA Workday account.
Maintain certifications by uploading continuing education credits via Y‑Link prior to the date of expiration.
Possess current CPR/AED certification and renew it every two years prior to expiration.
Obtain specialty certifications (e.g., Y‑Metro Atlanta Pilates, Group Cycling, Active Older Adult) or outside certifications approved by Metro Atlanta Y prior to teaching the designated format.
Pass a group exercise audition based upon the teaching format.
Be knowledgeable about fitness‑related issues, including aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, nutrition, injury‑prevention, and the COACH APPROACH.
Obtain THE COACH APPROACH Orientation within 30 days of hire date.
Exemplify YMCA ideals and leadership qualities and possess strong customer‑service skills.
Pass a criminal background and drug‑screening check.
Responsibilities
Carry out daily program tasks related to the position’s scope and responsibilities.
Stay updated on current issues regarding group fitness/wellness programs.
Promote, monitor, evaluate, and ensure that group exercise classes run smoothly with a high level of service to participants.
Maintain branch and association certifications in CPR/AED and other required certifications.
Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
Secure and select suitable music for a family setting.
Assist as needed in all aspects of the YMCA and its community.
Participate in and partner with wellness cabinet activities.
Ensure follow‑through of incident/accident reporting procedures.
Log class attendance in GroupEx PRO by 11:59 p.m. of the night the class is taught and log in at least twice per week to check for facility updates and substitute opportunities.
Secure a substitute instructor in a timely manner if unable to teach a class.
Apply Metro Atlanta YMCA risk and safety guidelines and branch emergency procedures consistently.
Refrain from diagnosing injuries, offering medical advice, or endorsing commercial health products.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to pass a pre‑employment background check, including criminal record check, drug screening, and motor vehicle record per company policy.
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
