Special Education Teacher – Self‑Contained (26‑27 SY) Reports to: Principal and Director of Special Education.

Receives guidance from: Principal, Assistant Principal, Local School Chair, and/or Director/Assistant Director of Special Education.

Overtime status: Compliant with position, salary, and FLSA regulations.

Job Purpose In keeping a tradition of excellence, the purpose of the Teacher Special Education is to help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women. The teacher develops and implements the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) through direct instruction and coordination of activities/work with the teachers at the local school.

Responsibilities

Plan, develop, and implement the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Assist in implementing and ensuring the completion of any related services the student might receive as set forth in the student’s IEP.

Meet and instruct assigned classes at the assigned school and at times designated by the Principal.

Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal.

Encourage students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.

Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with those goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the location’s physical limitations and the needs and capabilities of the students.

Implement, through instruction and action, the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.

Implement District initiatives pertinent to the student’s age, grade, and/or placement.

Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports according to district policy and the state’s progress‑marking policy for an implemented IEP.

Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.

Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.

Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable terms.

Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants as needed.

Lead and attend staff meetings/trainings as applicable; serve on staff committees.

Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, keeping current with literature, new research findings, attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences, and maintaining any credentials and/or continued education required for licensure or qualifications.

Maintain and accept responsibility for any district‑owned fixed‑asset item assigned to the employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use.

Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures.

Maintain confidentiality.

Regular, dependable, in‑person attendance is an essential function of this position.

Perform such other duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director, or established by district policy.

Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all other district, state, and federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by RCSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education.

Hold an appropriate Mississippi teaching credential or valid emergency certification issued by the State of Mississippi Educational Board.

Physical Demands

Employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using equipment such as a keyboard and video display terminal.

The employee occasionally needs to stoop, kneel, reach, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment

The workplace is the active school campus, both inside and outside the facilities. Noise levels are usually low to moderate and occasionally high.
