Position Overview Under direct supervision, performs a variety of civilian field and office law enforcement work in support of safety and non‑safety personnel. This pre‑trainee level, non‑safety position is part‑time/as‑needed while attending an accredited college toward an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Graduates eligible to attend a police academy with city expense; lack of completion within three years results in release.
Key Responsibilities
Take police reports for crimes such as bicycle theft, automobile theft, burglary or similar cold complaints.
Mark and arrange for the towing of abandoned vehicles.
Enforce parking regulations by issuing traffic citations.
Perform traffic and pedestrian control as directed.
Participate in crime prevention activities (neighborhood watch, community presentations, department tours).
Maintain records and retrieve information.
Attend weekend and/or evening training sessions.
Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university, taking at least 12 semester / 18 quarter units toward an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice or related field, maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Valid California driver’s license.
Ages 18 to 23 at the time of application.
Correctable vision to 20/20, no color deficiencies.
No felony convictions. No misdemeanor convictions that mandate weapons prohibitions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Techniques for dealing with the public in a tactful and collaborative manner.
Techniques for gaining trust and getting people to cooperate.
Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation.
Learn the organization and functions of a Police Department.
Apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies, practices.
Work courteously with the general public on telephone and in person.
Deal with the public firmly, courteously, and tactfully.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Respond to all supplemental questions.
Submit a transcript of college units completed.
Provide proof of current full‑time enrollment and anticipated graduation date.
Optional: Attach resume (not required for application).
Recruitment & Selection
Selection will include academic evaluation, driving record, citizenship, and criminal history.
Additional assessment: oral interview, live‑scan fingerprinting, background investigation, polygraph testing, psychological assessment, medical assessment.
