Responsibilities Model the YMCA core values: caring, honest respect, and responsibility. Officiate/referee the assigned sport and demonstrate core skills through academy‑style classes and during games. Provide customer service to participants and coaches, using teachable moments and memorizing the YMCA Sports Pledge to present on game day. Ensure a consistent and quality experience for all participants, parents, and volunteers. Interact with and diffuse situations involving dissatisfied individuals. Set up and take down sports equipment, maintain a clean and safe work site, and assist custodial staff as needed. Read and understand the rules of the YMCA league, enforce rules using a whistle, verbal communication, colored flags, or other relevant tools. Provide direct supervision to program participants at all times and correct hazardous situations swiftly, demonstrating professionalism. Follow all safety rules and regulations, including emergency procedures and equipment locations; attend all in‑service training and staff meetings. Prepare incident reports accurately and on time; seek guidance from a supervisor in unusual circumstances. Adhere to all policies and procedures of the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley. Participate in and solicit others to participate in YMCA financial development efforts, specifically the Annual Campaign. Maintain required certifications. Attend regular meetings and keep a timely schedule. All other duties as assigned by the Branch Executive Director and/or Program Director I - Sports.
Education and Experience Enrolled in high school working toward a diploma or equivalent at minimum. No officiating/refereeing experience required; must have knowledge of the sport and basic understanding of the rules.
Certifications and Other Qualifications Pass a background check. CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Mandatory Reporter certification. Obtain YMCA‑provided certification training programs within 30 days of hire if not already certified.
Physical Demands Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and run to keep up with the pace of the game/play. Must stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear regularly, and stoop and kneel occasionally. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, depth perception, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee regularly uses oral communication skills, observes and interprets people and situations, analyzes and solves problems, and performs work on multiple, concurrent tasks with constant interruptions.
Work Environment Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. Noise levels vary from quiet to loud depending on events and hours. Works in gymnasiums and outdoor playing fields.
