Motor Vehicle Operator – Temporary (Multiple Vacancies)
Join The City University of New York as a Motor Vehicle Operator. This temporary position will provide essential transportation support for faculty, staff, students, athletic teams, and field trips across campus and the Harlem area.
GENERAL DUTIES
Operate a variety of motor vehicles including passenger cars, ambulates, vans, hearses, trucks, wreckers, forklifts, tractor‑trailer trucks, and sign‑erecting trucks.
Drive shuttles to transport faculty, staff, students, and athletic teams to checkpoints and event locations.
Check and maintain vehicle functions (tires, oil, fuel, lights, horn, brakes) and report any mechanical defects.
Clean interior and exterior of vehicles, change tires or wheels as needed.
Assist in loading and unloading materials, equipment, passengers, and coin box collectors.
Prepare trip reports and maintain accurate logs of mileage and fuel consumption.
When not driving, perform additional duties such as running errands, answering phones, and delivering mail or packages.
Dispatch personnel, vehicles, and equipment in a small garage setting when required.
Respond to traffic hazards and conduct emergency repairs in a timely manner.
Transport collectors and cases of coin boxes to and from collection areas.
Maintain tools, supplies, materials, and equipment carried on or in the vehicle.
CONTRACT TITLE Motor Vehicle Operator
FLSA Non‑exempt
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION Facilities Management and Campus Planning provides a reliable shuttle service for the campus community. The Motor Vehicle Operator reports to the Chief of Staff of Facilities Management and performs the duties listed above, requiring a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in New York with a School Bus (S) endorsement, a Passenger (P) endorsement, and no air‑brake restriction. The selected candidate must keep this license current throughout employment and comply with all FMCSA and NYS DMV requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
No formal education or prior experience requirements.
Candidates must undergo a medical examination.
NOTE
Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle License is required.
Some positions may require a Class A, B, or C CDL or a learner’s permit that must be converted within three months of appointment.
History of serious driving violations, license suspensions, or major accidents may disqualify an applicant. The license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
COMPENSATION New Hire: $45,496 • Incumbent: $51,410 ( salaried suppression applies for 24 months)
Benefits include health plans, retirement/pension plans, tuition waivers for CUNY graduate study, and generous paid time off.
BENEFITS The full CUNY benefits package is available to employees and eligible dependents, including pension and tax‑deferred savings plans. Part‑time employees must meet weekly or semester hour criteria for health coverage, and retirees may also qualify for health benefits.
