YMCA of Greater Brandywine
Overview
The lifeguard is responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all aquatic facilities. This role enforces aquatic policies and procedures in compliance with state statutes and the guidelines of the YMCA and associated licensing agencies. What You’ll Do
Actively scan the assigned zone of coverage every 10 seconds and reach the farthest point within an additional 20 seconds. Perform a thorough bottom scan of zones as you rotate in and out. Position yourself to ensure visibility of the pool bottom, avoiding glare or obstructions. Guard from one of two positions: (1) in an elevated chair at the pool edge OR (2) standing/patrolling within one foot of the pool edge at all times. Follow the Jeff Ellis & Associates “5 Minute Strategy” by changing body position every five minutes. Never leave the pool deck unguarded; be rescue ready at all times with required equipment. Participate in all required drills and respond as if drills were live situations. Close the pool when conditions are unsafe and alert a supervisor; follow the Thunder and Lightning Policy. Communicate professionally with members and follow association guidelines for swim tests and child safety protocols. Enforce pool rules consistently and politely; assist in maintaining a clean facility during rotations. Abide by the scanning and rotation expectations, including breaks and restrictions on cell phone use during shifts. Comply with all YMCA of Greater Brandywine policies and standard operating procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
Must be 15 years of age or older Current lifeguarding certification from Ellis & Associates or transferred Ellis & Associates lifeguard certification Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens Complete required monthly in-service hours of Ellis & Associates training and scanning skills Obtain and maintain all additional new hire certifications and trainings within 90 days of hire Work Conditions and Physical Demands
