Incumbent serves as Correctional Officer for Vigo County Community Corrections, responsible for maintaining security and order within the Work Release facility.

Responsibilities

Enforce local, state, and federal laws and implement effective policy to protect the lives and property of all people.

Maintain interior security of the facility, including monitoring surveillance cameras, door controls, meals, visitors, conducting patrols, performing “shakedowns” of all cells/dormitories, and searching residents for contraband; keep accurate accounting of all residents.

Monitor resident activities and behaviors, ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations, and report all unusual activity or inmate grievances to appropriate department staff.

Assist residents with modifying behavior by promoting and modeling positive social values, personal accountability, daily living skills, personal hygiene, and health care issues. Compile and prepare behavior reports and summaries for courts and department superiors.

Maintain order in common areas such as showers, dining hall, dorm, and dayroom; oversee residents in allowable activities, including making commissary purchases and telephone calls. Intervene as per policy in critical incidents to prevent escape, injury, or property damage.

Distribute meals, supervise work details and other activities in and around the facility, ensuring proper and timely completion.

Regularly inspect the facility to ensure security and cleanliness of all areas; monitor general health and welfare conditions of detainees. Issue prescribed medications per physician orders and assist in administering emergency first‑aid measures as needed. Operate portable alcohol sensors and collect drug screens as required.

Verify resident release from the facility for work, counseling, and approved requests; check residents in and out following prescribed procedures; escort residents to and from treatment providers, Department of Corrections facilities, court, medical facilities, and other sites as directed.

Answer telephone calls and greet facility visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages, and directing callers to the appropriate individual or department. Respond to inquiries regarding individual residents and facility activities.

Maintain current knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws concerning Community Corrections operations and ensure program compliance with guidelines established by the Vigo County Advisory Board.

Attend in‑service training as required.

Occasionally testify in legal proceedings or court.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Minimum age of 21 years.

Possession or ability to obtain required certifications and training, including First Responder/CPR and conflict de‑escalation and defense tactics training.

Thorough knowledge of Department procedures and authority to take action as situations demand.

Understanding of street slang, security threat groups, conflict resolution, crisis intervention techniques, and safety precautions.

Proficiency with assigned Department equipment and weapons, including radios, breathalyzers, handcuffs, restraints, security panels, video monitoring, metal detectors, medical blister packs, and fire suppression devices.

Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; ability to complete required forms and reports by established deadlines.

Knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control; ability to apply such knowledge to protect against infection.

Experience with radio frequencies, codes, and procedures; clear and distinct communication via radio and telephone.

Ability to obtain and apply knowledge of applicable laws, codes, ordinances, and accepted police procedures.

Effective oral and written communication skills; sensitivity to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversity, and disabilities.

Confidentiality of Department information and records per state requirements.

Compliance with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including attendance, safety, drug‑free workplace, and personal conduct.

Diplomatic and respectful public service, even in hostile or violent situations.

Ability to read, memorize, retain, and follow oral and written instructions and present findings.

Skill to handle potentially violent individuals swiftly, rationally, and decisively, applying discretion and common sense.

Capacity to perform essential functions of the position without compromising personal or workplace safety.

Ability to work alone or in a team with minimal supervision, under time pressure, and multitask.

Analytical skills for data evaluation and decision making.

Basic arithmetic skills.

Judgment in extreme or uncommon situations.

Willingness to work extended or irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends; occasional travel out of town for training or inmate transports (not overnight); occasional off‑duty emergency response.

Ability to testify in court proceedings.

Valid Indiana driver’s license with a demonstrated safe driving record.

Supplemental Information Incumbent reports directly to the Correctional Officer Supervisor. Duties are performed in a confinement center with regular exposure to hazards associated with security operations, including hostile or violent individuals and communicable diseases. Physical requirements include walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, restraining violent individuals, lifting or carrying equipment weighing 25 to 50 pounds, and various other movements. Universal health and safety precautions must be observed at all times.
