Founded in 1905, the Humane Society of North Texas is the oldest animal welfare organization in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. HSNT serves animals in need by providing services such as pet adoptions, spay/neuter surgeries and low-cost vaccinations, returning lost pets to their owners, cruelty investigations and humane euthanasia. We operate two pet adoption centers in Tarrant County as well as PetSmart and PetCo Cat Adoption Centers and an equine ranch located in Johnson County.

The Humane Society of North Texas is seeking a qualified horsemanship trainer to follow a step-by-step natural horsemanship program designed by the Head Trainer. The trainer should be able to start colts and work with problem horses all the while creating a safe working space for both the horse and human. Always using kind and humane training techniques.

Share the philosophy of your horsemanship and preferred training background.

Essential Functions of the Position

Evaluate new horses’ needs and direction they should go in.

Keep daily notes of each horse’s progress and oversee staff’s notes of progress with horses they are working with.

Assist in overall evaluation of equines (behavioral, medical, adoptability). Assist staff or veterinarian during medical evaluation as needed.

Meet with potential adopters, as needed, to support the adoption process related to an equine’s temperament, rideability to ensure the best match.

Help Head Trainer put on Natural Horsemanship Clinics and for the public to showcase HSNT resources for potential adopters.

Safely load and unload a horse from a trailer.

Be able to drive a truck pulling a horse trailer.

Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service.

Protect the confidential information on customers and donors.

Additional tasks as assigned by the Head Trainer.

Position is for up to 30-40 hours per week.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position

4 years steady equine experience of advanced riding and training.

Proficient at working safely with untrained equines; able to professionally execute training from groundwork through riding advanced behavioral issues such as bucking, etc.

Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.

Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.

Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Humane Society of North Texas, with volunteers, the public, and be a team player.

Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.

Must demonstrate initiative and flexibility in constantly changing work demands.

Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.

Working Conditions

The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day.

Weekend work will be necessary.
