Job Title: Swim Instructor
Department: Parks & Recreation
Reports To: Program and Aquatics Manager
Supervisory Responsibilities: No
Classification: Non-Exempt
Driving Status: No
Work Environment: Pool
Summary Provide coaching and instruction for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Instruction will occur both in small groups, and private/group formats across various pools and seasons.
Position runs June to August with hours from 8 am - 8 pm, Monday-Friday.
Essential functions
Protect the safety and health of all swim participants.
Assess swimming competencies for each level and make recommendations for placement in appropriate classes.
Develop a lesson plan for swimmers of various ages and developmental levels. (Infant-Adult)
Teach swimming skills consistent with age and developmental level. (Infant – Adult)
Attendance at pre-season training on June 3rd from 4-7 pm.
Related functions
Submit course rosters and information in a legible and organized fashion.
Submit lesson plans for all lessons when requested.
Physical Requirements
Ability to demonstrate all swim strokes at a proficient level.
Ability to demonstrate physical fitness to include frequent light to occasional heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing, and walking for long periods of time, bending, pushing, and pulling.
Must be able to provide in-water instruction.
Able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time and intermittently.
Ability to reach with hands and arms, push items overhead, occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch.
Ability to talk, hear, and see.
Competencies
Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of all applicable swim skills.
Must be able to communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, and other coaches.
Know and understand emergency procedures.
Skills
Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
Abilities
Ability to communicate in small groups.
Ability to provide leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants.
Required Education and Experience
Technical knowledge of swimming strokes and skills.
Preferred Education and Experience
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification.
Previous Swim Instructor experience.
Advanced swimming skills.
Previous experience teaching private swim lessons.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
