Job Description Summary Under general supervision of shop foreman or assistants, the incumbent performs skilled craftsman‑level duties in heating/air conditioning and refrigeration work. Makes routine repairs, responds to trouble calls, analyzes problems, and executes necessary action to correct mechanical/electrical issues; participates in outages when required to complete a task. Repairs, maintains, and installs all associated refrigeration, cooling, and air conditioning equipment for the hospital. Ensures adherence to EPA and other regulatory guidelines, maintains EPA Universal Certification, and ensures no unauthorized gas leaks. The incumbent will, on a rotating basis, be on call for one week and work a weekend scheduled shift. Considered essential personnel in a disaster and performs related and unrelated duties as required.

Primary Responsibilities Monitors, maintains, adjusts, and repairs building HVAC systems owned or leased by the Medical University of South Carolina to ensure safety, environmental control, and economic operation. Requires working knowledge of HVAC systems including chillers, AHUs, drives, motors, pumps, and refrigeration units. Inspects and operates refrigeration, cooling, and air conditioning systems to ensure proper functioning. Installs new equipment and systems and repairs and maintains current equipment and systems. Monitors and inspects work to ensure compliance with codes and regulations, performs preventive maintenance inspections according to schedule, and documents maintenance, inspections, and services performed. Assesses facility risk for safety and informs management of potential risks. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma. Building Code, National Fire Code, Joint Commission Education, and/or certification in a related field preferred. Refrigerant and CFC certification preferred.

Five years of commercial HVAC equipment installation and system operation experience.

Ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations; write reports, correspondence or manuals; and present information effectively to groups, patients, employees, and medical staff.

Ability to perform basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide) using numbers, money, and units of measure.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions; handle concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.

Minimum Experience Plant equipment management and/or related experience in a healthcare environment desirable. Must have five years of commercial HVAC equipment installations and systems operations experience.

Additional Requirements EPA Universal Certification. Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime as required, and be qualified physically for respirator use. Holds a valid driver’s license. Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted.

Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors or outdoors, from elevated areas, in confined or cramped spaces, and from kneeling positions. Must be able to bend, twist, squat, and reach overhead. Must lift up to 50 lbs. and exert up to 50 lbs. of force. Must maintain 20/40 vision, hearing acuity, and be able to manage stressful situations. Must work rotating shifts and overtime as required.
