7-12 School Counselor Job Description

1 Year Position SY 2025-2026 Position Overview The High School Guidance Counselor provides academic, career, and social-emotional support services to students in grades 7–12. The counselor helps students develop educational and career plans aligned with their interests and abilities, fosters positive mental health and resilience, and collaborates with staff, families, and community agencies to ensure student success.

Responsibilities Academic Development Assist students with course selection and scheduling to ensure graduation requirements are met in accordance with Arkansas Department of Education standards. Monitor student progress, attendance, and academic performance; provide interventions when needed. Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support student learning and academic achievement.

Career & Postsecondary Readiness Guide students in developing Individualized Student Success Plans (SSPs) per Arkansas requirements. Provide resources for college, career, technical, and military pathways. Assist students with applications for college admission, scholarships, financial aid, and employment opportunities.

Personal/Social Development Provide short-term counseling to address student concerns related to stress, relationships, self-esteem, and other issues impacting school performance. Implement school-wide programs that promote positive behavior, conflict resolution, and safe school culture. Refer students and families to outside mental health providers or community resources when appropriate. Deliver a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the

Arkansas Comprehensive School Counseling Model . Maintain accurate records, prepare required reports, and ensure compliance with state and district policies. Participate in Response to Intervention (RTI), 504, and IEP meetings as part of the student support team. Collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders to support student growth.

Qualifications Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field. Valid Arkansas school counseling license (Grades K–12 or Secondary, depending on endorsement). Knowledge of Arkansas Department of Education graduation requirements and the Arkansas School Counseling Model. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
