Purpose

The Cultural Resources Division at Pipestone National Monument is dedicated to the preservation, protection, and interpretation of the monument’s rich cultural heritage. Our mission is to steward the site’s archaeological, ethnographic, and museum resources in collaboration with affiliated Tribal Nations. We work to ensure that cultural landscapes, sacred objects, and traditional knowledge are respectfully managed and meaningfully integrated into park operations, interpretation, and decision‑making.

There is a critical need for additional support in managing and preserving the museum collections at Pipestone National Monument, especially following a major storage facility remodel. This internship will help address long‑standing gaps in collections care while incorporating updated cultural protocols developed with Tribal partners. The individual’s work will directly benefit affiliated Indigenous communities by ensuring sacred objects are preserved with respect and care. Additionally, the internship fosters intergenerational knowledge‑sharing and builds capacity for future professionals in cultural resource management.
