Job Summary:
Swim instructors are responsible for teaching youth how to swim with an emphasis on water exposure, water adaptability, strokes, skills, techniques and safety skills.
Essential Functions:
Effectively teach patrons different skills and techniques used in swimming
Supervise children at all times including fun time and return to their parents
Calm upset children and make them feel at ease in the water
Discipline children if necessary
Keep student attendance records and distribute student certificates
Responsible for class preparation
Set up and clean up all required equipment
Perform all jobs and tasks within guidelines and rules of District’s safety program.
Education and Experience:
This position requires the completion of two years of high school or 16 years of age and three years of experience in recreational or competitive swimming.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Aquatic certification
Strong swimming and/or lifeguarding skills
Aptitude to perform under high pressure time sensitive situations
Decision-making skills
Ability to manage children
Ability to communicate with the public
Understand and anticipate customer’s needs as well as support a customer service environment
Ability to portray a professional image of the District
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Requires frequent sitting and walking with occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling and crouching. Occasionally lifts and/or moves items weighing up to 30 pounds, rescues may require lifting up to 300lbs with assistance. Most activities are performed outdoors; including hot, humid and wet conditions. May be occasionally exposed to chemicals associated with normal beach maintenance. Exposure to a quiet noise level while in office and a moderately loud level while outside.
Starting Rate:
$17.00 per hour (hourly may vary depending on qualifications)
