Salary and Benefits Wage Range (Firefighter/AEMT) : $58,589 to $79,089

Wage Range (Firefighter/Paramedic) : $65,752 to $88,757

General Purpose Performs a variety of firefighting and AEMT or Paramedic duties related to protecting the life and property of city residents. Must be able to drive and operate all types of fire and EMS apparatus.

Firefighter

Receives continuous classroom and field training in fire prevention, E.M.T., and firefighting techniques, principles, and procedures

Receives specialized training in salvage and rescue operations, emergency medical aid, civil defense, hazardous materials, disaster, drowning, and other related emergency situations, and participates in drills

Responds to fire alarm signals; serves as member of firefighting team; rides fire truck to scene of fire; manipulates various sized appliances, nozzles, hose streams; lays and connects water hose, hooks up pump, holds nozzle and directs water stream; raises and climbs ladders and utilizes other specialized equipment such as chemical fire extinguisher, SCBA, encapsulated chemical suits, power saws; operates extension ladders in rescue situations; uses rope, axes, etc.

Receives instruction on policies and procedures to conduct fire prevention inspections; conducts inspections and advises residents or owners; assists in performing fire scene investigations to determine "point of origin" and cause of fires; prepares and submits a variety of reports related to inspection activity

Participates in public presentations, station tours, community events, and marketing to promote fire hazard awareness and fire prevention

Advanced AEMT

Evaluates patient condition, injuries, accident scenes, and medical emergencies; administers aid per protocol; monitors vital signs; provides basic life support until transported to hospital

Operates resuscitation and suction devices during CPR; uses vacuum splints, cervical collars, backboards, and other medical devices used to immobilize patients during transport and extrication

Applies bandages and dressings on soft tissue injuries to stop bleeding; applies pneumatic anti-shock pants per protocol; lifts and carries patients from scene to ambulance according to established procedures; performs related duties as required

Paramedic

Performs various lead worker duties and assists in coordinating continuing education programs, workshops, and seminars aligned with Paramedic licensing requirements

Coordinates with state regulatory agencies; provides mentoring supervision to less experienced Paramedic and AEMT personnel; evaluates AEMT performance; recommends employment status including retention, advancement, discipline, or discharge

Responds to emergency medical calls; operates ambulance under emergency and customary conditions; transports patients to healthcare facilities

Evaluates patient condition, injuries, accident scenes; administers aid per protocol; monitors vital signs; provides basic life support until transported to hospital

Performs advanced life support procedures such as direct laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation, endotracheal suctioning, jet insufflation, surgical cricothyrotomy, needle thoracostomy, femoral venous access, ECG interpretation, synchronized cardioversion, defibrillation, transcutaneous cardiac placement, use of infusion pumps; administers advanced medications (adeno, albuterol, atropine, dextrose, nitroglycerine, dopamine HCI, diazepam, etc.); utilizes advanced medication routes; monitors special medications; may perform rapid sequence intubation and ipratropium bromide inhalation therapy

Performs intermediate-level emergency medical procedures such as blood drawing, external jugular access, subcutaneous injections, intravenous injections, nebulized inhalations, intradermal biological testing, immunological vaccination administrations; administers various advanced medications; monitors potassium IV drips; operates resuscitation and suction devices during CPR; applies bandages and dressing; performs basic life-saving procedures (pulse oximetry, blood glucometry, oxygen administration, ventilator applications, splinting, airway placement, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent

Must be 18 years of age

Utah State Certified Advanced-EMT or Paramedic

Certifications

IFSAC Firefighter I and II

IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness

IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations

Utah Advanced-EMT License or Paramedic License

BLS/CPR certification

Additional Certifications (Must be obtained within 1 year of employment)

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

NWCG Wildland Firefighter II (Red Card)

NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800

CEVO Ambulance

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of first-aid and emergency medical techniques and procedures; emergency vehicle operation; various medical procedures; medical terminology; firefighting methods and equipment; equipment maintenance and care; state and city codes; fire vehicle equipment; interpersonal communication skills; some knowledge of training methods.

Ability to follow detailed work instructions; work in dangerous emergencies; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; work under extreme weather; work on call and shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors and the public.

Special Qualifications

Must have and maintain a valid State of Utah driver's license or obtain one prior to employment, and be deemed insurable.

Supplemental Information Work Environment Functions performed in controlled environment, but subject to seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency responses expected. High hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application required.

Supervision Received Works under close supervision of Shift Captain or OIC.

Testing Information Application period ends: Friday, January 9 at 5:00 p.m. Invitations to test sent on: Monday, January 12, evening. Test Date: Monday, January 26. Test will be a 10-15 minute presentation, two fire skills TBD by Engineers, and two EMS skills TBD by Senior Medics.

Pre-Employment Screening Following a conditional offer, all Kaysville City employees must successfully complete a pre-employment drug test and criminal history check. Employees requiring a motor vehicle are required to complete a motor vehicle record (MVR) check. Must possess a valid Utah State Driver’s License and be bondable under Kaysville City. Firefighters must pass a physical readiness test.
