Adjunct Instructor - Political Science (Pool) Reporting to the Department of Social Sciences, the Adjunct Instructor of Political Science is a part‑time position that teaches traditional and/or non‑traditional college‑level students at on‑campus and/or off‑campus sites on weekdays, weeknights, and Saturdays. Work is contingent upon enrollment needs on a per‑semester basis. In addition to teaching, part‑time faculty must provide student assistance and advice in their subject area and may be required to participate in student orientation sessions.

Essential Job Functions

Demonstrate commitment to the University’s mission and goals and effectively teach college‑level students.

Accept and support the mission and goals of the University.

Engage in planning, developing, and improving curriculum offerings.

Promote data collection, continuous improvement, accreditation requirements, and end‑of‑course evaluations.

Direct curriculum instructional activities that encourage critical thinking, problem‑solving, motivation, self‑image, and clarification of values.

Provide each student with a copy of the syllabus on the first day of class, ensuring it meets university‑approved requirements.

Teach the course in accordance with the approved syllabus.

Inform students of course objectives, grading system, attendance policy, academic integrity, and bibliography of suggested readings.

Hold classes as scheduled, including those immediately preceding and following university holidays.

Obtain pre‑approval from the applicable Department Head or Dean before rescheduling or canceling a class.

Notify the Department Head or Program Coordinator of absences and arrange instruction, submitting the faculty absentee form as required.

Provide ample opportunities for discussion, demonstration, presentation, and explanation of student ideas.

Utilize a variety of teaching strategies and instructional technology.

Encourage use of available resources to enhance learning.

Prepare and conduct each class so students master objectives at the upper end of Bloom’s taxonomy.

Present teaching materials respectfully and understandably.

Use assessment methods that reflect course objectives.

Grade and return assignments within ten working days.

Equitably administer academic policies across student groups.

Ensure coursework requires students to analyze, explore, question, reconsider, and synthesize knowledge and current events; relate to accepted practices; and engage in research and diverse viewpoints.

Effectively manage the classroom environment.

Promote professional classroom behavior and adhere to University policies.

Counsel students with disruptive behavior; report persistent misconduct to the Department Head.

In a threatening situation, contact appropriate emergency responders (Campus Police & Security at 919‑546‑8249 or local security/911).

Uphold academic integrity.

Identify safety hazards and implement corrective action, ensuring Material Safety Data Sheets are posted.

Develop, maintain, and submit accurate records, forms, reports, and requests.

Maintain accurate attendance, assignment, and grade records.

Take class attendance and record each student.

Provide information promptly upon Department or administrative request.

File enrollment reports as requested.

Submit final grades within 48 hours of the final exam.

File final evaluation reports within 48 hours of the final exam administration.

Submit end‑of‑semester course documents by the deadline, including syllabus, attendance, test materials, grade sheets, rubric, projects, and narrative.

Submit analysis of student learning outcomes to the Program Coordinator.

Propose undergraduate curricular changes to the Department Head.

Submit textbook orders by required deadlines.

Complete check‑out with the Department Head at year end.

Return University property, equipment, and materials on time and in good order.

Obtain pre‑approval to invite guest speakers; ensure substantive knowledge.

Report any emergency to the Department Head promptly.

Maintain effective collegial communication and professional interaction within the department, college, and off‑campus sites.

Ensure positive relations.

Resolve interpersonal and transactional issues effectively.

Communicate and disseminate information appropriately.

Exercise sound judgment in responsibilities.

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and comply with University policies and procedures.

Follow the Faculty Handbook and Employment Handbook policies.

Demonstrate professional conduct at all events.

Avoid conduct that disrupts operations or degrades reputation.

Follow policies related to harassment, intellectual property, equal opportunity, confidentiality, and external regulations.

Adhere to financial guidelines, including travel and purchasing of instructional materials.

Use university resources efficiently.

Actively pursue scholarly activities and development; remain current in the teaching field.

Improve competence through workshops, conferences, organization membership, writing, publishing, consulting, and grants.

Participate in University professional development activities and system training as needed.

Maintain up‑to‑date tech skills, including Canvas or similar platforms.

Minimum Job Qualifications Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Political Science from an accredited institution or related discipline for non‑practice courses.

Minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field.

Preferred

MS or Ph.D. in Political Science or related discipline.

Demonstrated success teaching at the college level.

Recent experience in a higher education setting.

Teaching experience and expertise in an additional area offered in the department.

Knowledge and experience using instructional technology.

Physical Demands Ability to sit or stand up to 8 hours per day; some lifting up to 25 pounds, bending, and carrying. Regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands and fingers.
