The ideal candidate will share Clovis Community College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2024-2025 academic year, we enrolled over 17,000 students in which 53% identify as Latinx, 13% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% as Black/African American, 25% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to providing services responsive to the students it serves.

Instructional Responsibilities

Providing instruction in English on the Clovis Community College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the instructor will be responsible for:

Teaching a full schedule of English courses which include transfer‑level composition and critical thinking;

Implementing appropriate practices to develop writing skills at all levels;

Participating in program development and expansion of English courses, including connections with industry and Guided Pathways;

Participating in program planning, student‑learning‑outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;

Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;

Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on‑line or off‑campus and large group instruction classes as needed;

Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122; and

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity‑minded practice within the classroom; and

Master’s in English, Literature, Comparative Literature, or Composition; or

Bachelor’s in any of the above and master’s in Linguistics, TESL, Speech, Education with a specialization in Reading, Creative Writing or Journalism; or

A valid California Community College Credential; or

The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications

Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;

Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;

Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;

Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;

Related work and professional experience;

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;

Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high‑quality instruction and support to students;

Experience working with traditionally underrepresented student populations, such as students of color and foster youth, and the ability to support students across sociocultural and socioeconomic diversities;

Experience in facilitating multicultural and cross‑cultural communication with sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, gender, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students;

Experience with, and sensitivity to, under‑prepared and high‑need students at the community college;

Successful experience in teaching or evidence of preparation to teach a broad range of college English courses, such as courses in basic skills reading and writing, transfer‑level composition, and critical thinking;

Knowledge and understanding of the pedagogy to teach Reading and Writing courses at the community college level;

Demonstrated commitment to professional development in English and Reading disciplines;

Demonstrated ability to promote and apply the college’s values for creating a learning environment of respect and equity, while encouraging creativity and critical thinking;

Willingness to develop and expand the college English program in areas such as curriculum development, instructional technology, interdisciplinary linkages, and basic skills;

Experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes, program learning outcomes, and general education learning outcomes;

Demonstrated ability and desire to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, student learning support and student success;

Familiarity with a writing center/lab setting or tutorial center for instructional enhancement;

Expertise in using current pedagogy for teaching composition courses, basic skills reading and writing, and integrated reading and writing;

An online teaching certificate, or the desire to earn one, and a willingness to teach classes online;

Awareness of current state and local legislation, such as AB 705, and its effect on the community college system;

Knowledge and awareness of current theories and methodology for teaching writing;

Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials; and

Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment 178 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits

Starting annual salary is $71,054 – $106,970 based on education and experience.

An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available.

In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

INTERVIEWS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED AS FOLLOWS:

FINAL INTERVIEWS THE WEEK OF 04/13/26 and 4/20/26

The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
