Position: Art Instructor Substitute
Reports to: Program Supervisor or Lead Art Instructor.
Department: ECF Art Centers.
Location: All Art Center Sites, minimum of availability at one of the three ECF studios.
Salary: Non‑Exempt.
Program Hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Minimum of two and a half work days of availability to pick up or work scheduled shifts. Work schedules created at least one month in advance. Guaranteed minimally 10 work hours available per week, with hours typically not to exceed 28 hours per week.
Supervision Responsibility: NONE Position Summary Under supervision of Program Supervisor, the Art Instructor Substitute will teach art to adults with varying degrees of learning, behavioral, emotional, and intellectual disabilities in the ECF Art Centers. This can include but is not limited to painting, drawing, mixed media, fibers. Implements special education and behavior treatment plans. Works with assigned ECF artists for scheduled shift, as directed by Program Supervisor, Lead Art Instructor, Case Manager or point person as designated by Program Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Implement artistic, educational, and behavioral support plans for assigned consumers, referencing consumer's IPP and directed by Program Supervisor and Case Manager. Ensure ECF artist’s well‑being during operating hours of the Art Center, while on premises, and in the community. Maintain case notes as needed during scheduled shift and submit these notes to Program Supervisor or Case Manager at end of shift. Participate in meetings and other in‑service trainings as assigned, monthly.
Give instruction on the proper use and care of materials and protection of artwork. Ensure safe use of equipment, including basic safety measures for working with tools, machines, and materials, and safe lifting procedures. Monitor artists throughout their projects during shift. Assist and instruct on projects assigned by Program Supervisor, Case Manager, or point person.
Set up and prepare equipment for daily use and maintain equipment. Ensure all art equipment is properly used and maintained by artists and the assigned studio area remains clean.
Organize artists’ portfolios by labeling and storing artwork in appropriate areas, as assigned by Program Supervisor, Case Manager or point person.
Participate in staff meetings to identify and implement artistic, educational, psychological, and social objectives for each artist. Address needs of culturally and linguistically diverse artists. Implement services and supports in accordance with the Lanterman Act and Person‑Centered Thinking Practices.
Follow protocols and policies to assist artists during incidents or crises. Employ NCI procedures to aid artists exhibiting aggressive behavior. Adhere to ECF’s Illness and Injury Prevention Program and report medical emergencies, abuse or neglect, and unusual incidents. Provide First Aid/CPR as necessary and assist artists with personal hygiene needs.
Be available to help promote the Art Centers during work hours. Inform the public of the Art Center mission and services, answer questions, and support community outreach. Distribute materials and information to interested parties.
Staff and supervise special exhibits featuring ECF artists’ work at various locations and times. Assist in organizing art shows and events, including matting, framing, installation, and tear down. Meet the public and assist artists with presenting and discussing their work.
Other Duties
Comply with ECF’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Safety and Medical Emergency procedures.
Ensure safe use and operation of tools and equipment.
Comply with ECF policies and procedures, including mandatory reporting requirements.
Observe regular on‑site work hours; reliable attendance is required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education / Licenses / Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an area demonstrating artistic skill.
Experience:
Six months in any combination of studio work, teaching (including undergrad TA positions), public and private art projects, art installations, museum work, or other directly related experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge in one art specialty area.
Skills to assist artists in their practice and goals (teaching, facilitating, guiding, encouraging, listening, advocating).
Effective verbal and written communication skills to teach adult artists.
Availability to teach all artists in the Art Center.
Requirements
Driving: proof of valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, evidence of state‑mandated insurance, and a clean driving record. Driving for work must maintain a safe record; violations may lead to disciplinary action.
Submit portfolio of completed work.
Provide evidence of a negative TB test.
Obtain and maintain NCI, First Aid, and CPR certification.
Ability to use public transportation or personal vehicles and drive the company vehicle to transport artists for community outings.
Work Environment This program serves adults with varying learning, behavioral, emotional, and developmental disabilities. Employees may encounter artists in crisis, experiencing emotional distress, or behaving aggressively. Exposure may include odors from acrylic and oil paints, cleaning solutions, ceramics debris, kiln noise, and instructors in an open space. The environment may involve frequent interruptions, loud noise, varying temperatures, drafts, and weather changes while traveling to art exhibits or other ECF sites.

Occasionally travel to various sites within Los Angeles County.
