The Upper School seeks a full time History teacher to join the Faculty. For this position, the Upper School seeks a thoughtful, energized, and collaborative educator who is comfortable working in a History Department that serves a wide range of learners and offers a diverse range of courses. The teacher needs to feel comfortable working with high school students one-on-one and managing a responsive classroom environment of diverse learners.
The position will teach four sections of History. Teachers will teach across a wide array of courses and work to meet the needs of the department each year. Our program includes:
Foundations and Skills (9th)
20th Century World/US History (10th)
AP United States History
11th and 12th grade teacher-designed electives
Upper School teachers are expected to serve as student advisors. In addition, Faculty and staff are expected to contribute to the school community beyond the classroom by coaching or supervising student activities. These responsibilities play a vital role in fostering student engagement and strengthening our shared community.
AFS seeks candidates with:
Experience teaching and advising in the high school setting
A BA in History or a related field; Masters in Education or History preferred
Ability to work in a highly collaborative department
Willingness to teach across the full history curriculum and adapt as needed
Skill at teaching core studentship skills (reading, writing, thinking, organization)
Ability to differentiate and support a wide range of learning styles and academic needs
Ability to create an engaged, dynamic, and student-centered classroom environment
Flexibility and responsiveness with course content and instructional approaches
Ability to envision, refine, and design the history curriculum
Competency in teaching Ethnic or Regional studies and the ability to integrate these areas into foundational courses is strongly valued.
Experience in teaching Politics, Government, or Civic Engagement meaningful.
Familiarity with Quakerism and/or Quaker education community
Willingness to meet and collaborate with students outside of classroom hours
Comfort working with, and appreciation of, adolescents as learners and individuals
Commitment to exploring the place of equity and justice as a feature of teaching & learning.
Extracurricular and coaching experience a plus
