Position Summary:
The Hockey Instructor will lead the facility’s youth (and some adult) hockey offerings, including, but not limited to: Leagues, Developmental Classes (ages 3‑8), After‑School/Home School programs, Clinics, Camps, Private/Semi‑Private Trainings, Sports Performance Sessions, and Birthday Parties. The Hockey Instructor at Wichita Ice Center is responsible for coaching and developing athletes in various hockey techniques across all skill levels. This role involves designing and implementing training programs, providing instruction and feedback, and fostering a positive and competitive environment for athletes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching relevant skills, tactics, and techniques to a wide range of athletes, individuals and groups
Develop and implement training programs tailored to the skill levels and goals of athletes
Conduct on‑ice and off‑ice training sessions, focusing on technical skills, tactics, and physical conditioning
Teach fundamental and advanced techniques in hockey
Monitor, evaluate, and enhance athlete performance and needs
Provide suitable feedback via positivity, encouragement, example, and motivation
Demonstrate an activity clearly by breaking down the task or technique into a sequence
Promote discipline, respect, and sportsmanship in all team activities
Be friendly and courteous with athletes, parents, and team members
Identify athlete strengths and areas for development
Ensure a safe environment for all athletes
Stay updated with the latest coaching techniques, sports science, and industry best practices
Perform all additional duties assigned by management
Minimum Qualifications:
Member in good standing with USA Hockey Coaching Program required
At least 2 years of appropriate coaching/teaching sport in youth programs for athletes of various aptitudes (preferred)
Ability to demonstrate and participate in on‑ice and off‑ice activities
Excellent interpersonal, problem‑solving and communication skills
Team player with strong leadership and motivational skills
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, predominantly after‑school and weekends
Neat in appearance and professional in manner
Strong knowledge of sports coach rules, techniques, and strategies
Strong organizational and time‑management abilities
Passion for sports and athlete development
Must possess current CPR/FIRST AID certifications, or willingness to obtain within a specified period
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds waist high
Must be able to move or lift lightweight equipment
Work performed in an ice arena environment, which includes cold temperatures and varying noise levels
Position requires standing and activity for extended periods of time (indoors or outdoors), squatting, stooping, jogging, or bending into awkward positions while performing job functions
