The Position A healthier future drives us to innovate, continuously advancing science to ensure everyone has access to healthcare. The Department of Antibody Engineering at Genentech is seeking a highly motivated and independent Postdoctoral Fellow to join the laboratory of Dr. Paul Carter.

This fellow will be mentored by an experienced researcher with a history of developing novel, patent‑able antibody technologies used in at least 17 different monospecific and bispecific therapeutics that have treated millions of patients worldwide. The successful candidate will engineer antibodies and other proteins via rational design and molecular evolution to enhance properties or endow new capabilities. On‑going research interests in the Carter lab include:

Engineering antibodies to improve high‑concentration properties for subcutaneous delivery.

Immunogenicity risk assessment and mitigation for engineered antibodies.

Applications of AI/ML for antibody optimization.

Opportunity

Create novel technologies with broad impact for future antibody therapeutics.

Collaborate with researchers across scientific disciplines.

Author or co‑author scientific publications.

Participate in Genentech’s postdoctoral training program for fundamental scientific research of therapeutic relevance.

Who You Are

Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, or a related discipline.

One or more first‑author research publications in high‑quality journals on protein/antibody engineering or a related field.

Experience in rational design of protein/antibody engineering, generating mutants, and expressing, purifying, and characterizing mutant proteins.

Creative, collaborative, and independent researchers with a passion for science and technology.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Compensation & Benefits Salary range for the position, based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California, is $98,000 to $104,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job‑related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed below. Relocation benefits are available.
