Elementary Special Education Teacher (K-6 Life Skills) Cross Categorical
Join Nixa Public Schools as an Elementary Special Education Teacher for grades K‑6, specializing in life skills. This role requires development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and providing specialized instruction to students with high needs.
Primary Tasks & Major Activities
Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Provide direct, specialized instruction for students in grades K‑6.
Conduct individualized student assessments and interpret results.
Teach life skills, academic skills, and manage behavior effectively.
Participate in relevant meetings and staffings.
Initiate and complete required paperwork within established timelines.
Collaborate with staff and individuals regarding student programming and services.
Delegate and supervise paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
Deliver individualized and small‑group instruction and co‑teach in a team environment.
Collect data and manage behavior consistently.
Attend parent meetings and participate in relevant after‑school and evening activities.
Supervise and evaluate paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
Support building‑level and district policies.
Administer MAP, EOC, and MAP‑A assessments.
Educational / Skills / Experience Required
Certification in K‑12 Special Education (cross categorical).
Knowledge and expertise in working with various eligibility categories.
Previous teaching experience with students who have high needs and teaching life skills.
Training in behavior management (required).
Minimum of three years teaching experience (preferred).
Competent technical skills.
Strong attendance record and positive interpersonal relationships with staff, parents, and students.
Knowledge of grade‑level and functional curriculum relevant to the position.
Experience with Missouri Assessment Program (MAP‑A) preferred.
Willingness to be trained in appropriate use of seclusion, isolation, and restraint procedures.
Willingness to support the District's Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.
Must pass a background check and drug test that are satisfactory to the Board of Education.
