Job Description Coordinate and supervise JHMHC, Shands Hospital, and UF (statewide) radiation safety activities. Maintain records with databases and logs, which are necessary to assure UF's compliance with state and federal regulations and license conditions.
Conduct interviews of Interventional Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Nuclear Medicine therapy outpatients to ensure that they can comply with all radiation safety requirements.
Conduct pre-approval inspections and consultations with principal investigators (PI) and laboratory employees regarding the use of radioactive materials or radiation producing devices.
In-service training activities (as necessary). Conduct formal and informal radiation safety training courses for medical and research employees at UF facilities, Shands Hospital, and ancillary sites.
Assist with investigations of unusual personal radiation exposures and incidents to determine cause and recommend corrective action.
Perform radiation safety inspections of laboratories, report findings, advise, and follow up on necessary corrective actions. Perform sealed source leak tests, analyze samples, and report results.
Maintain UF and UF Health “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA) policies. Oversight of UF Health Quality Management programs.
Provide input for the Radiation Control Committee, the Human Use of Radioisotopes and Radiation Committee (which interacts with the Institutional Review Board). Act as RSO in their absence.
Radiation monitoring “in the field” using portable radiation detection instruments, and in the laboratory by operating radiation measuring instruments. Assist with maintaining inventories and inspections of radiation‑producing machines to assure registration and operation of devices comply with state and federal regulations.
Operate UF/state vehicle for inspections and off‑site travel.
Expected Salary Commensurate with education and experience
Minimum Requirements A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and five (5) years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications Education & Training
Master's degree in health physics, medical physics, or similar field
Current American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification
Licensed within two years
Experience: Work experience in a large academic medical center preferred
Knowledge
Knowledge and understanding of federal radiation safety regulations
Knowledge of data collection techniques
Skills
Proper use of survey instruments
Exceptional organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks.
Abilities
Ability to work independently
Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing)
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments
Ability to operate motor vehicles
Physical Qualifications
Ability to contact animals
Ability to contact human blood
Ability to contact patients
Ability to use a respirator
