Group Exercise Instructor (AM Cycle) - South Tampa Family YMCA Position Summary The Group Exercise Instructor reports to the Group Exercise/Wellness Coordinator and/or the Wellness Director. The instructor motivates members, builds relationships, and delivers multiple exercise options (Les Mills, Cycling, Step, Body Sculpting, Zumba, Yoga, Water Exercise, etc.) while presenting a positive image of the YMCA through high‑quality fitness programs designed for the community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Instruct members in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise routines.

Monitor member progress and adapt programs as needed.

Observe members and provide corrective measures to improve skill.

Evaluate individuals’ abilities and develop suitable training programs.

Offer variations of the routine to accommodate all fitness levels.

Provide guidance to members performing potentially dangerous or harmful exercises.

Solicit feedback and answer questions to support goal achievement.

Maintain accurate class attendance records.

Adhere to YMCA operating policies and procedures.

Clean and maintain equipment according to schedule.

Design and lead special programs and events as required.

Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations.

Provide own class coverage when unavailable.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Coordinator or Director.

Follow safety, health, and welfare policies, responding to emergencies per facility protocols.

Complete required meetings and trainings.

Support the mission message during annual giving events.

Teach water exercise classes from the pool deck.

Safety and Risk Management

Adhere to all safety regulations and YMCA policies.

Implement emergency procedures, child abuse prevention, and supervision guidelines.

Manage high‑risk activities and supervise participant boundaries.Report incidents/accidents per risk management procedures.

Perform daily safety checks of program areas and equipment.

Maintain records of certifications, meetings, and trainings.

Promote a safe, positive, respectful environment for members and staff.

Report suspicious or inappropriate behavior.

Position Requirements

Minimum age 18 years.

National certification in group fitness instruction (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, Les Mills, Zumba) or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.

Yoga instructors must have a current 200+ hour yoga certification.

Water exercise instructors must have a current water instructor certification.

At least one year of experience leading group exercise classes preferred.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to build positive relationships with diverse groups.

Strong organization and preparedness to teach classes.

Represent the YMCA positively.

Certifications/Trainings Required

Obtain community CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 30 days of employment and maintain current status.

Maintain position‑specific certifications as outlined in the training matrix.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Plan, lead, and participate in classes and activities.

Verbally and physically communicate program content effectively.

Hear participant discussions and questions.

Perform all physical aspects of the position, including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, teaching from the pool deck, and lifting.

Lift equipment and move a minimum of 50 pounds.Stand for extended periods.

Adapt to extreme humidity, heat, and cold.

Travel for training may be required occasionally.

Work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Wear appropriate fitness attire and footwear at all times.
