Days per year: 260 | Wage: Minimum $14.25, Mid $16.77 (Nonexempt, Pay Grade: Aux 3)
Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Director of Building Operations and/or school-based administrator, the Building Operator cleans and maintains offices, halls, classrooms and similar areas in a school building. The operator follows district-trained cleaning procedures, supervises assigned staff, and maintains custodial standards to create a safe, clean, and efficient building environment. All employees are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate respectfully, and champion the needs of students while driving continuous improvement.
Qualifications
High school graduate or GED
Effective communication in English
Minimum 5 years of job‑related experience, including at least 3 years supervising staff
Special Knowledge/Skills
Comprehension of verbal and written instructions in English
Knowledge of routine custodial practices, chemicals, and materials used in cleaning
Basic repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance
Personnel management
Effective planning and organizational skills
Major Responsibilities & Duties
Supervise assigned staff in daily cleaning procedures and projects
Conduct building inspections and correct quality problems
Unlock facilities and prepare for daily activities; perform policy grounds tasks
Sweep sidewalks, patios, and entrances; lower and raise cafeteria tables
Oversee cafeteria set‑up and clean‑up; remove facility trash and re‑line cans
Monitor hallways and restrooms every 1½–2 hours, replenishing dispensers as needed
Order supplies and maintain inventory control
Caring for carpet and hard surface floors; maintain equipment cleanliness and operability
Related Duties
Dust vents, ledges, shelves, and horizontal surfaces
Wet‑wipe walls, tables, desks, chalkboards/trays, glass
Disinfect restroom fixtures and floors
Polish chrome fixtures; disinfect public phones and fountains
Move furniture and perform project cleaning; empty pencil sharpeners
Remove carpet spots and complete general custodial duties as assigned by supervisor
Respond to emergencies or crisis situations in the district
Equipment Used Vacuum cleaner, broom, dust mop, wet mop, bucket, wringer, spray bottles, high duster, cart, small hand tools, automatic floor machine and extractor.
Audio/Visual Demands

Corrected 20/20 vision
Good depth perception
Ability to distinguish between colors
Personal Protective Equipment
Rubber gloves, goggles, and apron when mixing chemicals; back support belts when lifting, if available
Working Conditions Frequent walking, standing, climbing, and heavy lifting and carrying; work inside and outside on slippery or uneven surfaces, using ladders; work alone and with team members. Daily chemical use in extreme weather conditions with and without air conditioning. Overtime as required.
