Job Summary The School Cafeteria Assistant assists in preparing and serving meals and supports all daily kitchen duties, working independently in a fast‑paced environment within limited timelines. The position is covered by the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (two years of related experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement).

Proficient in basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication).

Completed the four‑hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety course and passed the examination within 21 calendar days of hire.

Experience using a touch‑screen point of sale system and knowledge of cashiering practices and procedures (preferred).

Previous food service experience (preferred).

Essential Job Functions

Assists in food preparation, cooking, heating, and filling of meal orders for cashiers, demonstrating an understanding of sanitation and food service practices.

Works independently in a fast‑paced work environment with limited timelines.

Sorts and stores food deliveries and reports supply shortages.

Assists in basic inventory needs and record‑keeping assignments, preparing simple reports and recording data as needed.

Operates point of sale system, makes change, and counts daily receivables.

Wipes counters, cleans and sanitizes equipment, refrigerators, freezers, sweeps and mops floors, washes daily laundry, and performs other routine cleaning/sanitation tasks.

Transfers trays, baskets, containers, utensils, and food items from one location to another as necessary.

Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students, staff, Anchorage School District personnel, and the public.

Physical / Mental Demands Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing; needs to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lb. Must be able to understand vague instructions, recall facts, handle conflict, and manage stress in a dynamic environment.

Work Environment Professional setting with diverse individuals, moderate noise level, exposure to video displays, outdoor weather conditions, and routine interaction with students and staff.

Additional Information Salary: $17.81 to $18.82 per hour (DOE). Work year: 9 months per year. Work day: 5 hours per day. FTE: 0.625 (part‑time). Position Type: Nutrition Services/School Cafeteria Assistant.
