Position Summary The Chemical Hygiene Officer/Safety enforces and manages environmental and chemical safety regulations across the University’s main campus, the Alabama Center for the Arts, and ASIM/AMSTI. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with regulations concerning regulated substances, overseeing procurement of laboratory chemicals, conducting inspections, managing safety training, maintaining the Chemical Satellite Accumulation Site (SAA), and continually improving safety practices.
Essential Functions
Knowledge of the current legal requirements concerning regulated substances, handling/disposing of reagents/chemicals, and adopting/following the requirements of relevant governing bodies, including the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Relevant yearly training may include hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER), hazardous communication (HAZCOM), and occupational safety and health administration (OSHA), or their equivalents as necessary.
Procurement of lab chemicals and proper recording of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Maintain a regular and routine presence at the Alabama Center for the Arts so that ongoing chemical/environmental oversight and collaboration with arts faculty on the safety of all labs and workspaces is easily observed, assessed, and reported.
Establish and provide ongoing guidance for protocols and best practices for chemical/environmental safety in all facilities, including the Alabama Center for the Arts, AMSTI, and the main campus.
Serve on the University Risk Management and Safety Committee.
Aid in the development, maintenance, implementation, and enforcement of Risk Management and Environmental Safety Policies, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Conduct yearly inspections of university buildings for potential risks and hazards and take steps to minimize risks and reduce hazards where possible.
Develop and implement a schedule for regular formal housekeeping inspections of the laboratory facilities, including inspections of emergency equipment.
Submit yearly inspections to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs as well as report violations that require interdepartmental cooperation to solve.
Ensure that the university follows all national, state, and local safety regulations related to chemical and environmental safety.
Maintain employee exposure records.
Develop and provide CHP safety training to new personnel, including those working in lab and facilities positions.
Develop and conduct lab safety training for faculty, staff, and student workers.
Maintain a list of CHP-trained individuals allowed level lab access.
Maintain the university's Chemical Satellite Accumulation Site (SAA), including the storage and proper disposal of chemicals from the main campus and ASIM/AMSTI.
Post and make available contact information in the event of an emergency.
Comply with all policies of the University.
Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing work scope and tasks based on need.
Actively work towards building cooperative and collaborative relationships with peers and internal faculty and staff.
Proactively engage in problem solving related to tasks in this position with internal and external people.
Routinely practice self‑monitoring by assessing oneself to make improvements or take corrective action to improve performance.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or related field.
Training in HAZWOPER, HAZCOM, and RCRA; appropriate OSHA training is a plus.
Experience with chemical storage procedures and waste disposal.
Experience with maintenance of lab safety equipment.
Experience with emergency response procedures to chemical spills.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel.
Ability to move up to 25 pounds.
Ability to problem‑solve, strong organizational and communication skills.
Working Conditions
Ability to remain in a stationary position such as standing and/or sitting for a prolonged period of time.
Ability to adjust or move up to 25 pounds.
Ability to communicate with others to exchange information.
Occasionally spend time in low postures such as crawling, crouching, kneeling, or stooping.
Frequently operate a computer.
Use hands to handle or operate laboratory equipment.
Ability to visually observe approximately 20 inches or less, including use of computers, working with small objects, or reading small print.
Position works with hazardous waste.
