Group Exercise Instructor - Pilates Instructor

Group Exercise Instructor – Part Time
Pay range: $19.00/hr – $25.00/hr
Position Summary Under supervision of the Fitness Coordinator/Director or Branch Director, the instructor is responsible for teaching safe, effective, and enjoyable group exercise classes, enhancing program quality, and supporting participant retention. The instructor also assists with branch activities such as special events.
Responsibilities
Provide a safe and effective workout in the scheduled class format, following current accepted practices of exercise physiology.
Supervise and guide participants through a workout that includes warm‑up, cardiovascular endurance, cool‑down, strength, and flexibility, while accommodating varying abilities and preventing poor form.
Maintain a clean and obstacle‑free workout environment.
Reduce injury risk by adhering to national YMCA safety guidelines.
Clean, organize, and maintain all equipment immediately after each class.
Demonstrate variations or modifications to encourage participants to pace themselves and keep movements pain‑free.
Know and follow emergency procedures as situations warrant.
Start and finish classes on time. If unable to teach a scheduled class, find a substitute to cover the assignment.
Encourage the practice of healthy lifestyles; do not promote special diets or supplements.
Develop member relations and engagement.
Provide individualized exercise and fitness instruction based on the overall needs of the class.
Increase YMCA exposure to non‑member participants.
Participate in staff activities (meetings, staff functions).
Qualifications
18 years of age or older.
Current CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens/First Aid certifications.
Experience teaching group exercise classes.
Must hold a current national certification from one of the following agencies: ACSM, ACE, AFAA, AFPA, ISSA, NASM, NSCA, WITS, YMCA Foundations of Group Fitness, Cooper Institute, NESTA, ISCA, FiTOUR, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a fitness‑related field.
Maintain nationally recognized certification in the class type you teach.
Teach a minimum of one regular scheduled group exercise class per week.
Provide copies of all certifications and required CECs to the fitness director or branch director each year.
Excellent human relations and communication skills.
Team player; willing to substitute teach for other instructors.
Physical requirements: walking, sitting, climbing, seeing, crouching, stooping, standing, hearing, speaking, kneeling, lifting (50 lb), carrying (50 lb), pushing (50 lb), and pulling (50 lb).
