This opening is for the DIXON HIGH SCHOOL camp site specifically.

This is a temporary, seasonal position to work full time Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm for the duration of the ten-week camp.

The 2026 camp dates are June 22 - August 13.

As a result of NC House Bill 612, candidates selected for summer camp positions will need to undergo a background check through the State Bureau of Investigation, which includes fingerprinting. Upon hire, all candidates will have to complete a pre-employment drug screen as well. Before applying, please ensure that you will be able to work these appointments into your schedule if selected.

The Summer Day Camp Counselor, under the direct supervision of the Summer Day Camp Director and overall supervision of the Recreation Division Manager, is responsible for assisting in the implementation of summer day camp programs and activities. This position performs intermediate skilled work in planning, organizing, and supervising recreational, educational, and social activities for children ages 6–12. Work involves ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants while promoting a fun, inclusive, and positive camp environment. The Counselor serves as a role model and mentor to campers and supports the Director and Assistant Director in the daily operation of the camp program.

Qualification Requirements Assists with planning, organizing and supervising summer day camp activities; provides input concerning program needs; maintaining records and files.

Assists in conducting a variety of recreational, educational, and social activities, including arts and crafts, games, sports, and field trips.

Provides direct supervision and engagement with camp participants to ensure safety, inclusion, and enjoyment during all activities.

Assists in maintaining proper staff-to-participant ratios and enforcing camp rules and behavior expectations.

Ensures that adequate resources, materials, and equipment are prepared, available, and properly used for planned activities.

Enforces policies and procedures of the Summer Day Camp program, Parks and Recreation Department, and Onslow County.

Assists with maintaining accurate attendance, activity, and incident records as required.

Supports the Director and Assistant Director in evaluating program needs and recommending improvements.

Provides basic first aid when necessary and promptly reports all accidents, injuries, or concerns to supervisory staff.

Acts as a positive role model for campers by demonstrating respect, responsibility, teamwork, and enthusiasm.

Assists with setup, cleanup, and organization of camp facilities and activity areas

Performs other duties as assigned to support overall camp operations.

General knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation programming and child supervision. Knowledge of safety procedures and behavior management techniques for children ages 6–12. Skill in leading group activities, maintaining participant engagement, and promoting teamwork. Ability to communicate effectively and positively with children, parents, and staff. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work cooperatively as part of a team, and exercise sound judgment in a variety of situations. Ability to maintain professionalism, patience, and composure in a fast-paced, active environment.

The individual in this position should embody the principles of being hungry, humble, and smart—demonstrating a desire to learn and grow, maintaining humility and respect in all interactions, and using good judgment and emotional intelligence when working with others.

Current high school student in good academic standing or high school graduate/GED. One to two years of related experience is preferred.

Special & Physical Requirements CPR certification preferred or ability to obtain when hired.

This work requires regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. Work regularly requires standing, walking, running, lifting, and using hands to handle or feel objects; frequently requires talking, hearing, and reaching with hands and arms; and occasionally requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Work has standard visual requirements.

Vocal communication is required to convey instructions and information clearly to children and staff, and hearing is necessary to monitor activity levels and respond appropriately to participants. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and regularly requires exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and active play areas. The position may require standing or walking for extended periods and occasional exposure to heat, humidity, and uneven terrain.

Salary will be determined by candidate's qualifications, budget, market, and internal equity.
