Moffitt Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida and the leading cancer hospital in both Florida and the Southeast.

This position is primarily responsible for preparing an autopsy station and maintaining cleanliness of the room as well as the tools needed for the procedure. As a technician, this position would assist a pathologist, resident and/or PA in preparing the body, moving the body during autopsy and handing out tools. Other duties include opening the body, taking x‑rays utilizing radiograph systems, and photos for documentation, collecting important biological samples and closing the body to prepare it for transport to a funeral home.

This position would also have additional laboratory duties and be responsible for ensuring proper handling of all specimens received in the anatomic pathology laboratories and preparation of these specimens for testing. Duties include computer data entry and accessioning, specimen processing, slide preparation, packaging of specimens appropriately, transport and delivery of specimens to the testing departments, and troubleshooting issues with samples and orders.

Responsibilities:

Attends Morgue

Responsible for monitoring traffic of decedents into and out of the morgue cooler.

Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of morgue and morgue cooler.

Assists with autopsies

Evisceration of decedents.

Assists pathologist/resident/PA with documentation of the autopsy process and/or records.

Photography of decedents.

Collecting and preserving biological samples.

Preparing decedents for release after the autopsy.

Assists the Anatomic Pathology Lab

Assisting with laboratory assistant coverage as needed in all Anatomic Pathology areas including the Gross Room and Histology labs.

Assisting with materials tracking such as scanning blocks/specimens during receipt.

Accessioning pathology specimens.

Assisting with maintaining the tissue processors in histology.

Ordering supplies for both the morgue and the Gross Room laboratory.

Ensuring reagents and supplies are up to date and not expired.

Credentials and Experience:

Associate’s Degree in Science-Related or Mortuary-Related field required.

2 years of experience in performing or assisting with autopsies.

Preferred:

Bacherlo’s Degree in Science-Related or Mortuary-Related field.

3 years of customer service and/or direct laboratory experience in addition to the minimum required above.

Experience with photography and documentation of decedents.

Experience using Kubtec and/or Faxitron radiograph systems.

Experience with collecting and preserving biological samples (i.e. research).

Excellent attention to detail and ability to document.
